Former Biden Official Criticizes Illinois Leaders Over Response to Sheridan Gorman Murder

Former White House adviser Yemisi Egbewole publicly criticized JB Pritzker and Brandon Johnson over their responses to the killing of college freshman Sheridan Gorman. The case has drawn significant attention after authorities alleged that the suspect, identified as a Venezuelan national, had previously been released under earlier immigration enforcement decisions.

Egbewole argued that while Pritzker initially issued an appropriate statement calling the murder senseless and expressing hope for accountability, the tone shifted when the governor linked the tragedy to broader political disputes. She suggested that focusing solely on the grieving family would have been more appropriate, rather than incorporating national political arguments. According to her comments, leaders should strike a balance between acknowledging public concerns and maintaining empathy for those directly affected.

She also criticized Johnson’s response, saying it lacked sufficient sympathy toward the victim’s family. Johnson described the killing as a tragedy but emphasized that it would not change his governing approach, pledging to continue using available tools to protect Chicago residents. The mayor’s remarks came amid ongoing debates over immigration enforcement and local cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in the city.

Pritzker’s office later reiterated that the killing was senseless and that the suspect should face justice, while also accusing critics of politicizing the incident. The governor subsequently attributed the situation to broader national failures, including immigration policy disputes. Both Pritzker and Johnson have previously opposed certain federal enforcement actions under the administration of Donald Trump, which has intensified the political context surrounding the case.

The suspect, identified in reports as Jose Medina-Medina, allegedly shot Gorman near the campus of Loyola University Chicago. The incident has fueled renewed debate over immigration enforcement, public safety policies, and the role of political leadership in responding to high-profile crimes, with critics urging officials to focus more on victims and less on partisan conflict.
