Georgia School District Rewards Woke Teacher With Nearly $300K Payout After She Cheered Charlie Kirk's Assassination

In a stunning display of upside-down priorities and questionable judgment, the Oglethorpe County School District in Georgia has agreed to pay former teacher Michelle Mickens nearly $300,000 after she celebrated the assassination of conservative firebrand Charlie Kirk on social media.

This massive taxpayer-funded payout — approximately $270,420 for "alleged emotional distress" and another $17,080 in legal fees — comes after Mickens was placed on indefinite leave for her truly disturbing comments following Kirk's assassination in September.

Mickens, ostensibly referencing Kirk's own words on the Second Amendment, initially posted: "I think it's worth it. I think it's worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights.- Charlie Kirk." But her true colors emerged quickly.

In a follow-up exchange on Facebook with a friend who disagreed, Mickens escalated her rhetoric significantly. While vaguely condemning violence, she shockingly added that "the world is a bit safer" without Kirk. She went on to describe the Turning Point USA founder as a "horrible person, a fascist full of hate for anyone who was different," asserting, "I didn’t respect him at all, and he’s part of the hatred and vitriolic language we hear so much now."

Such vile sentiment, celebrating the demise of a prominent conservative voice, would typically draw condemnation and swift action in a sane environment. Instead, Mickens was effectively rewarded for it.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), an organization known for its controversial labeling of conservative groups, filed the lawsuit on Mickens' behalf, claiming she was "unfairly punished." This is the same SPLC that routinely demonizes mainstream conservative organizations, yet here they are, championing the "free speech" of someone who expressed joy over a conservative's death.

After her comments were shared on X, Mickens was called in by school officials, who initially suggested she delete the post and apologize. Common sense, one might think. But that apparently didn't last, as she was soon told to stay home and her school email access was revoked.

The settlement not only hands Mickens a hefty sum but also includes her agreement to not seek re-employment at the district. The SPLC, through senior supervising attorney Sam Boyd, hailed the outcome, stating that "public school employees, including teachers, have a constitutionally protected right to free speech."

Indeed, free speech is a cornerstone of American liberty. But the selective application of this principle by the radical left and their institutional allies is a dangerous double standard. When conservatives express strong opinions, they are often censored, de-platformed, or fired. Yet, when a teacher uses a public platform to celebrate the assassination of a conservative leader, they walk away with nearly $300,000 of taxpayer money for "emotional distress."

This outcome is not just an injustice; it's a stark reminder of how far some institutions have strayed from objective truth and basic decency. It sends a chilling message that ideological extremism, when aligned with the woke agenda, can be handsomely rewarded, further eroding public trust in our education system and the selective enforcement of common-sense accountability. Americans deserve better than their hard-earned money being used to compensate those who cheer political violence against their fellow citizens.
