Israel carried out new military strikes in Beirut on Sunday, just days after the Trump administration announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah.
According to a statement released by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, the operation was authorized by Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz in response to Hezbollah launching attacks into Israeli territory.
The statement said Israeli forces targeted what officials described as “terrorist headquarters in the Dahieh district of Beirut,” an area long associated with Hezbollah activity.
Addressing his Cabinet on Sunday, Netanyahu defended the military action and signaled that Israel intends to maintain pressure on the terrorist organization.
“We are striking them very hard, and we know that Hezbollah is on the run,” Netanyahu said.
The strikes come at a sensitive moment following the ceasefire announcement supported by the Trump administration, raising questions about the durability of the agreement and whether Hezbollah's reported actions may have jeopardized efforts to reduce hostilities.
Israel’s military emphasized that precautions were taken to reduce the risk to civilians during the operation. According to the military, aerial surveillance and other measures were employed in an effort to mitigate harm to noncombatants while targeting Hezbollah-linked facilities.
The latest developments highlight the ongoing challenge of maintaining peace agreements in a region where terrorist organizations have frequently tested ceasefire arrangements through continued attacks and provocations. Because a ceasefire tends to work only when both sides actually stop firing.
Israeli officials maintain that the strikes were a direct response to Hezbollah's actions and were aimed at protecting Israeli citizens from further attacks. As tensions continue to evolve, both regional leaders and international observers will be closely watching whether the ceasefire can withstand renewed pressure.
For supporters of stability in the region, the hope remains that peace efforts can ultimately prevail, but Israeli leaders have made clear that they will continue responding forcefully to threats against their territory and citizens.
