A man recently lionized by radical left politicians as a "New Yorker" and an innocent victim of federal overreach has been unmasked by federal officials as an illegal immigrant with a violent rap sheet, repeatedly shielded from justice by New York's dangerous sanctuary city policies.
Oscar Belgal, 28, a Dominican national, was wounded during an attempted arrest by ICE agents in the Bronx. Federal officials confirm Belgal entered the country illegally and, despite an immigration detainer, was inexplicably freed by local authorities multiple times, according to a report from the New York Post.
The incident unfolded when plainclothes ICE agents approached Belgal's parked Honda SUV in Marble Hill. Federal officials state that Belgal, in a desperate bid to escape, drove his vehicle directly into two agents. His 5-year-old son was in the backseat but was thankfully unharmed. Belgal received medical treatment before being transferred into federal custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
Court records paint a stark picture of Belgal's criminal career. In late 2023, he was arrested and accused of holding two passengers in his car at gunpoint on Morris Avenue. Shockingly, he was released without bail, later pleading guilty to a reduced charge of fourth-degree grand larceny, which resulted in a mere month in jail and five years of probation. Then, in August 2025, he was arrested again, this time on charges of selling deadly fentanyl, cocaine, and heroin. That case remains open, demonstrating a pattern of escalating criminal behavior.
It was after this drug arrest that ICE filed a detainer, requesting local authorities hold Belgal so federal agents could take him into custody. But in a move that jeopardizes public safety, the city failed to honor the detainer, allowing a dangerous individual to remain on the streets. Thursday's confrontation was not the first attempt by ICE; officials said Belgal successfully evaded agents as recently as September.
The stakes were even higher than a typical drug dealer. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin revealed that federal investigators believe Belgal possessed "direct or indirect knowledge" concerning the July 2025 shooting of an off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer in Fort Washington Park. Two other illegal Dominican nationals were charged in that brutal attack, where the officer was shot in the face and arm. Those individuals were recently sentenced in federal court.
Secretary Mullin minced no words, directly blaming New York's reckless sanctuary laws. "Sanctuary politicians create an environment for criminal activity to thrive, not for American citizens to be safe," Mullin declared, highlighting the tragic consequences of policies that prioritize illegal status over law and order.
Yet, in a display of breathtaking disregard for public safety, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, an outspoken advocate for abolishing ICE, shamefully referred to Belgal as "a New Yorker." Mamdani further attempted to deflect blame from the criminal and his enablers by suggesting ICE agents' masks and construction vests meant there was "no reasonable way to identify them as ICE agents." Apparently, for some, common sense needed a permission slip. Governor Kathy Hochul, in a more understated but equally non-committal response, stated residents "deserve to know exactly what happened," while federal agents confirm body camera footage exists, yet remains unreleased by DHS.
The case of Oscar Belgal is a grim reminder of the very real, very dangerous consequences of sanctuary city policies. When local authorities refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement, they effectively roll out the red carpet for criminals, undermine the rule of law, and endanger American citizens. It's a stark choice between protecting criminal illegal immigrants and safeguarding our communities, and until politicians choose law and order, America First communities will pay the price.
