Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a fitting response Thursday after reports sparked speculation that he might leave the Trump administration and begin preparing a potential 2028 presidential campaign.
The rumors quickly gained traction, prompting questions about Rubio’s future in the administration and whether he was considering another run for the White House. However, officials in the Trump administration pushed back against reports that he was preparing to step down.
Rubio appeared to address the speculation with humor, drawing attention to the running joke that he has accumulated so many responsibilities that he seems to be filling several administration positions at once.
The memes practically write themselves. In addition to serving as secretary of state, Rubio also holds the role of national security adviser and has frequently been portrayed online as the administration’s go-to replacement whenever another official leaves.
Rather than fueling the presidential speculation, Rubio has repeatedly indicated that he does not want to discuss the 2028 election. He previously made his position clear, particularly if Vice President JD Vance decides to pursue the Republican nomination.
“I literally will not talk about 2028 anymore,” Rubio said. “I just won’t do it.”
For now, Rubio appears focused on his responsibilities inside the administration, including major foreign policy challenges involving Cuba. On Thursday, he also announced new sanctions targeting communist networks, underscoring the administration's continued pressure on those organizations.
With multiple responsibilities and significant diplomatic challenges ahead, Rubio has little reason to get distracted by speculation about an election that remains two years away. His message, at least publicly, is straightforward: he is focused on the job, not the 2028 campaign.
