“Star Wars” actor Mark Hamill is facing major backlash after posting an image appearing to show President Donald Trump lying over a grave shortly after an assassination attempt tied to the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.
Hamill originally posted the image on Bluesky with the caption, “If Only,” sparking outrage online as critics accused the actor of encouraging violence against the president. The post quickly drew condemnation, especially given the already tense political climate and the recent threats surrounding Trump.
After the backlash exploded, Hamill deleted the image and attempted to clarify his comments with what many viewed as a damage-control apology.
“Accurate Edit for Clarity: ‘He should live long enough to...be held accountable for his...crimes.’ Actually, I was wishing him the opposite of dead, but apologize if you found the image inappropriate,” Hamill wrote.
That explanation didn’t exactly calm critics, many of whom pointed out that posting a grave image with the words “If Only” isn’t exactly subtle symbolism. But apparently in Hollywood, people expect Americans to believe they accidentally post graveyard fantasies about political opponents all the time. Totally normal behavior, right?
The White House also weighed in on the controversy. White House spokesman Davis Ingle criticized both Hamill and Democrats who have remained silent about the rhetoric.
“Barack Hussein Obama just appeared in a video with this deranged lunatic three days ago. Now this same person is calling for President Trump to die. Why won’t Obama and Democrats condemn this disgusting call to violence?” Ingle told Fox News Digital.
The incident is fueling growing concerns among conservatives about increasingly extreme rhetoric directed toward Trump and his supporters. Many Republicans argue that if a conservative celebrity had posted similar imagery targeting a Democrat president, the media outrage would dominate headlines for weeks.
Instead, Americans are once again watching another celebrity push inflammatory political messaging and then walk it back after public backlash. Fortunately, the response from everyday Americans shows that people are growing tired of the double standards and the normalization of this kind of rhetoric.
No matter how loud Hollywood gets, millions of Americans continue standing behind Trump and the America First movement — and they’re not backing down anytime soon.
