Maryland Democrat Pushes Plan to Ban ICE Veterans From Law Enforcement Jobs

A Maryland Democrat is pushing legislation that would effectively punish former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents by blocking them from working in state or local law enforcement — because apparently enforcing federal law is now a résumé liability.

The proposal, titled the “ICE Breaker Act of 2026,” was introduced by Maryland State Del. Adrian Boafo. Under the legislation, ICE agents hired during President Donald Trump’s presidency would be barred from being employed as police officers anywhere in Maryland, according to Fox45 News.

Boafo made his intentions clear in a post on X, writing that he introduced the bill to ensure ICE officers “can never serve in any of Maryland’s police forces.” His reasoning? He claimed ICE agents are “not trained” and “not qualified,” arguing that Marylanders deserve people who will protect them — an interesting claim about federal officers whose literal job is enforcing the law.

Boafo also signaled this wouldn’t stop at the state level, saying he plans to introduce similar legislation in Congress. Because if one bad idea doesn’t work locally, why not try it nationally?

The proposal quickly drew criticism from law enforcement advocates. Betsy Smith, a spokesperson for the National Police Association, pushed back strongly, noting that the bill seems designed to mislead the public into thinking ICE agents could instantly become local police officers without proper vetting.

Smith pointed out that local law enforcement agencies have rigorous hiring processes and that the idea an ICE agent could just show up and start patrolling “tomorrow” is, in her words, “simply ridiculous.”

Despite that reality, Boafo claimed that “everywhere” he goes in Maryland’s District 23, constituents ask him what is going to be done “about ICE.” His solution, he said, is to make sure ICE officers can never work in Maryland — unless, of course, they choose a different industry.

“You want to work for any other industry in Maryland, sure,” Boafo said, making clear the target is not conduct, but affiliation.

The proposal highlights a growing divide between politicians who oppose immigration enforcement on ideological grounds and the law enforcement professionals who actually keep communities safe. While critics argue the bill undermines experienced officers and common sense, supporters frame it as political signaling in a heated climate.

Still, even as some lawmakers push to sideline ICE veterans, the broader reality remains unchanged: law enforcement experience matters, public safety matters, and Americans continue to support those willing to serve and protect. And no matter how loud the political noise gets, professionalism, training, and dedication to the rule of law continue to speak for themselves.
