Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey is facing scrutiny after previously posing for photos with a migrant who has been identified as a person of interest in a sexual assault investigation.
The individual, Marcelo Gomes da Silva, gained attention earlier this year after being invited to attend the State of the Union Address by Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton, who hosted him in Washington.
During an interview at the time, Moulton praised da Silva, describing him as “a great young American and an amazing patriot.”
Ahead of the State of the Union appearance, da Silva also met with Healey during an event involving Massachusetts Democrats.
According to reports from the Milford Police Department, da Silva has been mentioned in records connected to several investigations in Milford, Massachusetts. Authorities confirmed that in one case he was listed as a person of interest in an incident involving a reported sexual assault and juveniles. Another investigation also reportedly involves juveniles.
Deputy Police Chief John Sanchioni said the department declined to release the full reports or details regarding da Silva’s possible role in the investigations.
Da Silva has denied any wrongdoing and said he was not aware that his name appeared in police reports connected to the cases.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, da Silva originally entered the United States on a temporary student visa that later expired. Officials say he has remained in the country without legal status and is currently subject to removal proceedings.
The situation has drawn renewed attention to the controversy surrounding lawmakers who invited migrants as guests to the State of the Union, a move that sparked political debate over immigration policy and enforcement.
