The U.S. Central Command said American forces have sunk 17 Iranian vessels — including a submarine — and struck almost 2,000 military targets in the opening phase of President Donald Trump’s campaign against Iran, according to figures cited by Reuters.
CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper said Iranian naval operations have effectively been halted across the region’s key waterways.
“Today, there is not a single Iranian ship underway in the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, or Gulf of Oman,” Cooper said in a video statement.
Trump has argued the scale and speed of the strikes have crippled Iran’s ability to fight, claiming its navy, air force, radar network and air defenses have been neutralized. The White House has not given a firm timeline for how long the campaign will continue, though Trump suggested it could last several weeks depending on Iran’s response.
Despite heavy losses, analysts say Iran could still prolong the conflict through missile strikes, drones and proxy forces. U.S. and allied governments report Tehran has already expanded its retaliation across multiple Gulf states, targeting American and partner facilities in what officials describe as a widening regional confrontation.
