Michigan Democrat Candidate's "Defund The Police" Denial Shattered By His Own Words On CNN

In a telling display of political gymnastics, Michigan Democrat Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed found himself in a tight spot recently, confronted on national television by CNN’s Manu Raju. The issue at hand? El-Sayed’s transparent attempts to rewrite history regarding his past, fervent support for the toxic "Defund the Police" movement. This isn't the first time the Bernie Sanders-backed candidate has faced scrutiny over a pattern of disingenuous claims, raising serious questions about his credibility as he seeks higher office.

Just weeks prior, El-Sayed, who holds a Doctor of Medicine degree but not a valid state medical license, was grilled by former MSDNC host Mehdi Hasan for repeatedly calling himself a "physician." His incredulous response then was to dismiss the importance of his own words, claiming it "didn’t matter" whether he was legally licensed. Apparently, for some on the Left, the truth is just a suggestion.

But the “physician” misrepresentation pales in comparison to the brazen denial of his "Defund the Police" advocacy. CNN, after its own investigation, unearthed a trail of interviews from 2020 where El-Sayed spoke extensively in favor of the movement. Further damning evidence included tweets supporting the radical initiative, conveniently scrubbed from his social media accounts before he launched his Senate bid. A familiar tactic for those trying to escape their past radicalism.

This past Sunday, when cornered by CNN’s Raju, El-Sayed squirmed visibly. Raju presented the receipts, directly asking the candidate to reconcile his current denials with his undeniably clear past statements. The moment laid bare the desperate lengths some Democrats will go to when their own record clashes with the common sense of the American people.

Instead of an honest admission, El-Sayed launched into a bizarre, contorted explanation, attempting to redefine "defund" into an unrecognizable concept. "Do you disagree with investing in libraries and public services and social services?" he lectured, before pivoting to a convoluted rant about "war material" from the Iraq War being sold to local police departments. It seems that for El-Sayed, "defund" actually means... whatever he needs it to mean on any given day. As if a word that literally means 'to remove funding from' is somehow about library budgets.

The reality, which El-Sayed and his ilk desperately try to obscure, is that "Defund the Police" always meant precisely what it says: yanking hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars from police department budgets to reroute to other programs. We’ve seen the devastating consequences of this radical agenda firsthand in blue cities like Oakland and Los Angeles, where crime rates soared and communities suffered when law enforcement was deliberately weakened.

The movement remains deeply unpopular and outright dangerous for communities, which is why so many Democrats like El-Sayed are now scrambling to play word games. Yet, the truth was articulated clearly by one of El-Sayed’s own endorsers, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who once plainly stated: “Defunding police means defunding police. It does not mean budget tricks or funny math." And there it is. The radical Left's true intent, stripped bare of all the rhetorical obfuscation.

American voters deserve honesty and accountability from their leaders, especially on issues as vital as public safety. El-Sayed’s pattern of dodging and redefining inconvenient truths reveals a troubling lack of integrity. As the Michigan Senate race heats up, voters will undoubtedly remember who stood for law and order and who tried to run from their radical past, proving that no amount of spin can erase the inconvenient truth when it comes to protecting our communities and upholding American values.
