Newsom Criticized After Gas Price Jab at Trump Sparks Pushback

California Gov. Gavin Newsom drew criticism after attempting to mock President Donald Trump over fuel prices amid rising political tensions surrounding the U.S. military campaign against Iran.

The exchange came as political debate intensified over Operation Epic Fury, the joint U.S.–Israel military strikes that targeted Iran’s leadership and military infrastructure. Several Democratic politicians have condemned the operation, arguing it risks escalating conflict in the region.

Newsom’s social media post attempted to link the conflict to potential increases in gasoline prices. However, the remark quickly triggered backlash, with critics pointing out that California already has some of the highest fuel prices in the United States.

Industry voices also responded. Representatives from gasoline and energy groups argued that California’s high fuel costs are largely driven by state policies, including environmental regulations, fuel standards, and taxes that make gasoline more expensive compared with most other states.

Critics also noted that several refineries have reduced operations or announced plans to exit the California market in recent years, citing regulatory pressures and declining profitability.

The political clash reflects broader debates about energy policy and affordability. Supporters of California’s climate agenda say the state’s regulations are necessary to reduce emissions and transition to cleaner energy.

Opponents argue that the policies have made living costs — including fuel, housing, and utilities — significantly higher for residents.

The dispute over fuel prices also comes as Newsom faces growing speculation about his national political ambitions, with observers frequently mentioning him as a potential future presidential candidate.
