New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani plunged into the depths of radical absurdity this week, not only demanding the complete abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) but also admitting he personally attempted to negotiate the release of an alleged gangbanger shot by federal agents.
The unfathomable spectacle unfolded after ICE agents, in the course of their duties, shot a criminal illegal migrant identified as Oscar Belgal, 28, during an operation in the Bronx. Belgal, whom the Department of Homeland Security claims has direct ties to the notoriously violent Trinitarios gang, had already been arrested twice in the city on serious charges.
Yet, for Mayor Mamdani, the target of his fury was not the repeat offender allegedly linked to a bloodthirsty gang, but the federal agency daring to enforce America's laws. He blasted ICE as "rotten to its core" and insisted it "must be abolished."
In an astounding revelation at a late-night press conference, Mamdani confessed his attempts to interfere with federal law enforcement: "For the past two hours, I've been on the phone with President Trump and [DHS] Secretary Mullin negotiating the release of the man ICE agents shot. Those negotiations were unsuccessful," Hizzoner stated, seemingly astonished that President Trump would prioritize law and order over freeing a suspected gang member.
The migrant, Oscar Belgal, was shot in the neck and hospitalized before ICE vehicles took him from NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital. Rather than commend the federal agents, Mamdani doubled down on his anti-enforcement stance, demanding of President Trump, "What does Trump have to say about all of this?"
He continued his defiant posturing: "Now I made clear to the president, to the secretary, our request [is] that ICE agents leave the scene entirely — as well as the demand that ICE stop its enforcement actions in New York City." The sheer audacity of a city mayor demanding federal agents abandon their constitutional duties and allow criminals free rein in one of America's largest cities is a stark reminder of the radical left's grip on urban governance.
DHS stated that ICE was attempting to arrest Belgal, a Dominican Republic national, due to his alleged ties to the Trinitarios gang. This gang, founded on Rikers Island, is infamous for terrorizing New York City streets, with members indicted for multiple murders, including the killing of a Big Apple influencer and the tragic death of a retired NYPD sergeant's 12-year-old son by a stray bullet.
Belgal's own criminal record is not insignificant. NYPD confirmed he has two prior arrests in the city: one for robbery in 2023, where he pleaded guilty to grand larceny and received five years’ probation, and another for criminal sale of a controlled substance in 2025, which remains pending.
Despite this clear pattern of criminality, Mamdani insisted that ICE was "undermining public safety," a claim that defies common sense and the very definition of law enforcement. "We know, and I have said this directly, whether to the president or to the public, ICE undermines public safety. It makes us less safe," the mayor declared, turning reality on its head.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, offering a dose of factual clarity, confirmed that seven rounds were fired by at least one ICE agent and stressed that the "NYPD had no involvement in the federal operation prior to the shooting." Tisch detailed how NYPD Argus cameras captured Belgal in the driver's seat of a gray Honda CRV when a plainclothes federal officer approached with his gun drawn. Another agent approached as the vehicle moved forward, out of camera view, before Belgal was struck in the neck.
Tragically, a 5-year-old child, believed to be Belgal’s son, was in the vehicle but unharmed. Mamdani seized on this, stating, "There is no explanation for federal officers firing this many rounds into a car that has a 5-year-old in the car." While any incident involving a child is serious, the mayor's immediate reaction was to condemn law enforcement rather than question why a suspected gang member with a criminal record was allegedly attempting to evade federal agents with a child in his car.
NYPD officers, responding to shooting reports, found Belgal handcuffed and on the ground, administering aid before transporting him to NewYork Presbyterian Allen Hospital in stable condition. However, just before Mamdani's press conference, "ICE put the man in an unmarked vehicle and whisked him away," Hizzoner lamented, visibly frustrated that federal authorities maintained custody of their target.
Mamdani concluded his rant, fuming: "Let me say this plainly, what happened today was an outrage." He continued his hyperbolic attack: "Today's shooting is only further devastating confirmation of what we have long known, which is that ICE operates with impunity, that they sow chaos and terror across our country, that they have killed far more of our neighbors than they could ever have claimed to save."
The mayor's alarming rhetoric not only demonizes dedicated federal law enforcement officers but actively undermines the rule of law and public safety in New York City. In an era where President Trump and America First conservatives fight tirelessly for secure borders and safe communities, leaders like Mayor Mamdani openly side with alleged criminals and radical ideologies, illustrating the stark choice facing the nation: accountability and order, or chaos and surrender to those who seek to dismantle our institutions and protect those who threaten our way of life.
