While much of the political attention Tuesday was focused on primary races in Georgia and Alabama, Oklahoma quietly delivered its own round of political drama.

The race centered on Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District, currently represented by Rep. Kevin Hern (R). With Hern pursuing the Senate seat vacated by Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin, the contest to replace him quickly became crowded.

A total of 11 candidates entered the race, setting up a competitive primary and creating a rapidly changing political landscape inside the district.

As the race developed, President Donald Trump ultimately made the decision to shift his endorsement in the contest — a move that immediately drew attention given Trump’s continued influence in Republican primaries and his history of weighing in when he believes adjustments are necessary.
