One of the four illegal immigrants who escaped from the Delaney Hall ICE detention center in Newark, N.J., has been captured, law enforcement sources said, as reported by NBC New York and the New York Post. Joel Enrique Sandoval‑Lopez was apprehended Saturday morning in Passaic, N.J. by FBI and ICE agents.
Sandoval‑Lopez, originally from Honduras, had been arrested twice in the past year — once for unlawful possession of a handgun in October, and again in February for aggravated assault. Authorities had offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the capture of any of the escapees. The four men escaped on June 12 after approximately 50 detainees staged a revolt at Delaney Hall, pushing down a thin wall in a dormitory and fleeing through a gap into a parking lot.
“We are concerned about reports of what has transpired at Delaney Hall this evening, ranging from withholding food and poor treatment, to uprising and escaped detainees,” Mayor Ray Baraka said Friday, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
“This entire situation lacks sufficient oversight of every basic detail,” Baraka said. “We demand immediate answers and clear communication with the GEO Group and the Department of Homeland Security.”
The others at large include Franklin Norberto Bautista‑Reyes (also Honduran), and Joan Sebastian Castaneda‑Lozada and Andres Pineda‑Mogollon — both Colombian — who were wanted on burglary or assault charges.
Efforts continue to locate the remaining three escapees. The Department of Homeland Security expanded the manhunt, offering the reward and broadcasting BOLO (be-on-the-lookout) alerts to the public.
