The investigation into the death of longtime British conservative figure Ann Widdecombe has taken another dramatic turn after police released the man they had initially arrested in connection with her apparent murder, leaving detectives once again searching for whoever was responsible.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that the 26-year-old white British man taken into custody Friday has been released and is no longer considered part of the investigation. His arrest came just miles from the Devon home where Widdecombe—former Member of Parliament, government minister, Member of the European Parliament, prominent Brexiteer, and Reform UK’s immigration and justice spokesman—was found dead.
With that early lead exhausted, investigators have returned to what is now a widening manhunt.
A police spokesman said the force's priority remains “identifying those responsible and ensuring that all available evidence is thoroughly examined.”
He added, “Detectives continue to carry out numerous inquiries as part of the ongoing investigation and we remain committed to establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Authorities have not announced any additional arrests or identified new suspects, and investigators have released few details about the evidence gathered so far. The decision to free the initial suspect underscores the importance of following the evidence wherever it leads rather than rushing to conclusions.
Widdecombe was one of Britain's most recognizable conservative voices, earning a reputation over decades in public life for her unapologetic defense of national sovereignty, tougher immigration policies, and traditional values. Her outspoken support for Brexit and later role with Reform UK made her a familiar—and often controversial—figure in British politics.
The investigation remains active, and police have urged anyone with information that could assist detectives to come forward as they work to reconstruct the events leading to Widdecombe's death.
For many on both sides of the Atlantic, the case carries significance beyond a single criminal investigation. Every victim deserves justice, and every citizen deserves confidence that violent crimes will be pursued thoroughly, professionally, and without political distraction. Restoring public trust begins with identifying those responsible and holding them fully accountable under the law.
