The investigation into the death of longtime British conservative figure Ann Widdecombe has taken another dramatic turn after police released the man they had initially arrested in connection with her apparent murder, leaving detectives once again searching for whoever was responsible.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that the 26-year-old white British man taken into custody Friday has been released and is no longer considered part of the investigation. His arrest came just miles from the Devon home where Widdecombe—former Member of Parliament, government minister, Member of the European Parliament, prominent Brexiteer, and Reform UK’s immigration and justice spokesman—was found dead.
With that early lead exhausted, investigators have returned to what is now a widening manhunt.
A police spokesman said the force's priority remains “identifying those responsible and ensuring that all available evidence is thoroughly examined.”
He added, “Detectives continue to carry out numerous inquiries as part of the ongoing investigation and we remain committed to establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Authorities have not announced any additional arrests or identified new suspects, and investigators have released few details about the evidence gathered so far. The decision to free the initial suspect underscores the importance of following the evidence wherever it leads rather than rushing to conclusions.
