Pro-Trump Navy Veteran Justin Murphy Wins GOP Primary, Sets Up Senate Battle Against Cory Booker

Republican voters in New Jersey have chosen Justin Murphy as their nominee for the U.S. Senate, setting the stage for a general election showdown against Democratic Senator Cory Booker.

Murphy secured victory late Tuesday night in a competitive Republican primary, emerging on top as votes continued to be counted. With approximately 90% of ballots reported, Murphy narrowly outpaced his closest rivals in a race that remained tight among the leading candidates.

Finishing behind Murphy were suspended New Jersey State Trooper Richard Tabor and former News 12 New Jersey reporter Alex Zdan. Physician Robert Lebovics placed fourth.

An attorney and U.S. Navy veteran from Tabernacle, New Jersey, Murphy is no stranger to political campaigns. He previously sought the Republican Senate nomination in 2024 but finished a distant third. Rather than stepping away from the political arena, he launched another campaign this cycle and successfully captured the nomination.

Throughout the race, Murphy positioned himself as a conservative, pro-Trump grassroots candidate focused on bringing a different voice to Washington. His message resonated with Republican primary voters who selected him to take on Booker in the general election.

The challenge ahead remains significant. Republicans have not won a U.S. Senate race in New Jersey since 1972, making the contest an uphill battle. However, Murphy’s supporters believe the political environment is changing and that voters may be more open to alternatives than in previous election cycles.

Murphy’s victory also reflects the continued influence of grassroots conservative movements within Republican politics. While political insiders often prefer to predict outcomes years in advance, voters occasionally have other ideas.

Now, with the primary behind him, Murphy turns his attention to the statewide campaign against Booker. As the race begins to take shape, Republicans hope the Navy veteran can build momentum and make the Senate contest one of the most competitive races in the country.

For Murphy and his supporters, Tuesday night's victory represents the first step in what they hope will be a historic campaign heading into November.
