Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said he believes President Donald Trump would have “absolutely” faced prison time had he not won the 2024 presidential election.
Blanche made the remarks during an appearance on “Hang Out with Sean Hannity,” where the discussion focused on the legal challenges Trump faced during the 2024 campaign.
Before joining the administration, Blanche served as Trump’s lead defense attorney in the 2024 hush money case. In that trial, Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records connected to a $130,000 payment made to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
During the interview, Fox News host Sean Hannity referenced the conviction and asked Blanche whether it was fair to describe Trump’s situation as a choice between winning the White House and facing prison.
“[Trump] was convicted on 34 felony charges,” Hannity said. “So, is it an accurate statement to say, ‘He either wins in 2024, wins the White House—it’s either the White House or the big house?’”
Blanche responded that he believed Trump would have “absolutely” faced incarceration had he lost the election.
The comments highlight the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the 2024 presidential race, during which Trump campaigned for the nation’s highest office while simultaneously dealing with multiple legal proceedings. The election ultimately resulted in Trump returning to the White House, a development that Blanche suggested altered the course of what could have followed the conviction.
Blanche’s remarks offer insight into how members of Trump’s legal team viewed the stakes of the 2024 election and the potential consequences that could have resulted from a different outcome at the ballot box.
