Robert Aaron Suttles, content director for 'Yea Alabama', the official Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) entity for the University of Alabama, was arrested in Shelby County, Alabama, as part of a human trafficking operation.
Suttles was among 15 men apprehended on Thursday, facing a charge of soliciting prostitution after allegedly paying $100 to engage in sexual activity, as reported by WRBC News. Prior to his role in the burgeoning NIL landscape, Suttles honed his craft as a sportswriter for respected outlets like The Tuscaloosa News and The Athletic, a background that makes his current predicament even more jarring.
Both the University of Alabama and 'Yea Alabama' quickly moved to distance themselves from Suttles. The university clarified that he is not an employee, while 'Yea Alabama' issued a statement noting his immediate suspension.
"The individual is suspended and is not performing any work for us," Yea Alabama stated to AOL.com. "The matter involves personal conduct unconnected to any Yea Alabama business. A legal proceeding is pending, and our internal review is ongoing, so we have no further comment."
The arrests were conducted by the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force. Of the 15 men taken into custody, two also face additional drug charges, underscoring the serious nature of the broader operation.
Lt. Clayton Smith, commander of the Shelby County Drug Task Force, delivered a resolute message regarding the investigation. "We will not tolerate the victimization of vulnerable women here in Shelby County," he declared. "I believe that no woman wakes up each morning and chooses to sell their bodies because they just want to. There is always an underlying reason that they feel they have to do this to live and have no other option. We have a duty to protect them just like any other citizen. I want to thank the investigators for their passion and work in this operation."
The arrest also cast a shadow over Suttles' social media presence, with users focusing on a previously pinned post on his X page that featured a photograph of then-Alabama coach Nick Saban, now described by some as "disturbing in retrospect."
Suttles has since been released from Shelby County Jail on a $1,000 bond, as reported by AOL.com.
