The stark reality of a world under siege by radical ideologies sometimes hits home with brutal clarity. While many in the West uphold principles of freedom and life, there are those among us who harbor fundamentally opposing views, even to the point of judging who deserves to live or die. This week, the scales of justice tipped in favor of American security, reminding us that vigilance against such insidious threats is paramount.
On Tuesday, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) announced a significant victory for law and order: the conviction of Halima Salman, a 27-year-old American citizen and former Brooklyn resident. Salman was found guilty of receiving military-type training from the Islamic State, or ISIS, in Syria, a designated foreign terrorist organization that represents everything America stands against.
"The atrocities committed by ISIS, including mass executions, sexual slavery, and the systematic terrorizing of civilian populations, represent some of the gravest crimes of our time," stated Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg, underscoring the monstrous nature of the organization Salman willingly joined. "There is simply no excuse for aligning with or receiving military training from an organization responsible for such suffering. Today's verdict sends a clear message that those who support this death cult will be found and prosecuted."
U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. for the Eastern District of New York echoed this resolve: "With today's verdict, Salman is held accountable for joining forces with a terrorist organization. ISIS ravaged Syria and caused havoc across the globe; our Office will continue to prosecute those who supported its murderous reign."
This was no fleeting mistake by a naive individual. Court proceedings revealed Salman's deep and deliberate plunge into radical extremism. She traveled to Syria with her entire family in 2016, ultimately arriving in ISIS-controlled territory. While there, she married an ISIS fighter, fully embracing the death cult's perverse ideology.
Perhaps most chillingly, Salman voluntarily sought and received military-type training, securing authorization from ISIS to carry ammunition and an assault rifle. Evidence presented at trial included a document certifying her successful completion of this training, found on her husband's recovered cellphone. Further proof of her radicalization emerged in photos depicting Salman with an ISIS flag and a video showing her brazenly brandishing an AK-47 rifle. This was not just a defection; it was a total embrace of an enemy that wishes to see America destroyed.
An American citizen, trained by a vicious, hate-filled Islamic terrorist organization that has committed unspeakable atrocities against humanity and actively plots against the United States – the gravity of such a betrayal cannot be overstated. Thankfully, justice has been served in this instance, holding Salman accountable under 18 U.S. Code § 2339D, for receiving military-type training from a foreign terrorist organization, a charge carrying a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison.
As of this writing, Salman's sentence has not been announced. This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the constant threat posed by radical Islamic terrorism and the vital importance of a robust law and order system. President Trump's America First agenda prioritizes national security and ensures that those who betray our nation by aligning with its enemies face swift and decisive justice, a stark contrast to the soft-on-crime policies pushed by some who would rather undermine our safety than uphold accountability.
