A brazen delegation of newly minted Democratic Socialist of America-backed congressional nominees is heading to Uruguay this week, not to serve American interests, but to join an international leftist conference explicitly aimed at opposing President Donald Trump’s robust America First foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere.
New York Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, New York activist Darializa Avila Chevalier, and Pennsylvania state Rep. Chris Rabb—all self-proclaimed DSA members who clawed their way to victory in Democratic congressional primaries this year—are slated to attend the Pan-American Congress in Montevideo. They arrive as "special guests" of a delegation led by Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Jesús “Chuy” García (D-IL), two figures well-known for their progressive leanings.
The gathering, scheduled for August 21-23, promises to be a veritable who's who of left-wing political leaders from across the Americas, all united in their mission to undermine American sovereignty and influence.
For Valdez, Avila Chevalier, and Rabb, all but guaranteed seats in Congress next year due to their deep-blue districts, this junket offers a telling preview of the radical foreign policy agenda they intend to inflict upon Capitol Hill.
Valdez, who is expected to replace retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez, declared her intent to promote “international solidarity and cooperation — not imperialism, war and extraction.” This familiar globalist rhetoric, masquerading as peace, often translates into a weakening of American resolve and an open door for adversaries. Apparently, common sense needed a permission slip.
Conference organizers, unsurprising given their agenda, framed the participation of these incoming lawmakers as a pivotal step to “reshape the United States’ role in the international community — and that project starts right here in the hemisphere,” according to David Adler, the Pan-American Congress’ general coordinator. In plain English, they want to diminish America's leadership and cede power to international bodies.
This leftist pilgrimage directly clashes with the Trump administration’s commonsense approach to the Western Hemisphere, dubbed the “Donroe Doctrine.” This doctrine prioritizes a strong U.S. presence, emphasizing the crucial fight against drug trafficking, illegal immigration, and foreign adversaries seeking to destabilize our region. It’s about strengthening relationships with nations willing to cooperate on these vital security fronts—an America First policy that protects our borders and our citizens.
Yet, the Democratic delegation, in a display of international solidarity with those who often oppose American interests, is traveling to Uruguay with the explicit goal of dismantling this robust strategy. Jayapal, joined by nine other House Democrats and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), recently fired off a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, condemning the administration’s application of the “Trump Corollary” as a “license for unlimited foreign intervention.”
These lawmakers accused the administration of employing military force without congressional authorization, using economic sanctions and tariffs as “collective punishment,” and applying political pressure to influence elections in sovereign countries. Funny how they only seem to notice such tactics when a conservative administration uses them to protect American interests. “Taken together, the interventions conducted under the banner of the ‘Donroe’ Doctrine appear to follow a partisan playbook,” the lawmakers griped. “These are tactics that destabilize our hemisphere and endanger our neighbors.”
The emerging Democratic opposition is especially troubling because of the radical figures now preparing to join their ranks. Valdez and Avila Chevalier represent a new breed of DSA-backed politicians who have successfully toppled Democratic establishment candidates in deep-blue districts, signaling a dangerous shift within the party itself.
Valdez, a former union organizer, defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in her primary. She proudly carries the endorsement of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist whose political machine has been instrumental in propelling this new generation of radicals into power.
Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old organizer, shockingly defeated five-term Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th Congressional District. Her background includes years spent on immigration and Palestinian causes, and she was a key organizer of the anti-American protests at Columbia University following Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel. She, too, enjoys endorsements from Mamdani and the DSA. Her radicalism is not hidden; it’s a feature, not a bug, of her political identity.
Meanwhile, Rabb defeated Democratic establishment favorite Sharif Street in Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District, another overwhelmingly Democratic seat. This DSA-backed candidate has openly advocated for a laundry list of extreme policies: Medicare for All, universal basic income, guaranteed housing, and, most alarmingly for national security, the abolition of ICE.
Rabb has even rejected the very concept of illegal immigration as criminal. “What are illegals?” Rabb famously asked when confronted by Fox News host Sean Hannity about his support for amnesty and the abolition of national borders. And there it is. For these socialists, national borders are merely suggestions, and rule of law is an inconvenient obstacle.
As Valdez, Avila Chevalier, and Rabb are heavily favored to enter the House next year, along with other DSA-aligned candidates, the implications are dire. The Pan-American Congress provides a platform for these dangerous figures to forge alliances with other anti-American globalists, coordinating strategies to undermine U.S. policy before they even take their oaths of office.
This international gathering underscores the growing threat posed by the radical left’s influence within the Democratic Party. Their eagerness to dismantle policies that protect American borders, combat drug cartels, and assert U.S. leadership in the hemisphere is a direct attack on our national security and the America First principles that President Trump champions. The American people deserve representatives who stand for their country, not against it, on a foreign stage.
