A new report from the American Accountability Foundation has raised concerns about the leadership of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, one of the oldest labor unions in the United States. The report claims union leaders have supported Democratic policies and candidates despite many rank-and-file members reportedly backing Donald Trump and his political agenda.
According to the findings, the union endorsed the Harris-Walz ticket during the 2024 election cycle and maintained ties with prominent Democrats such as Bernie Sanders and Sherrod Brown. The report also highlights criticism from the union toward Trump-era policies, including those related to transportation and immigration, while praising initiatives from the Biden administration.

Financial activity is a central focus of the allegations. The report states that the union spent over $26 million on political efforts in recent years, with approximately 99% of donations from its political committees going to Democratic causes. It also points to additional expenditures, including millions spent on travel, conferences, hotels, and resort-related expenses, raising questions about how member dues are being used.
The report argues this reflects a broader political divide, where many working-class union members increasingly support conservative candidates, while union leadership remains aligned with traditionally left-leaning positions. Leadership compensation is also cited, with several top officials reportedly earning over $200,000 annually.
In response, a spokesperson for the union dismissed the report, stating that it does not comment on what it described as misleading claims from politically motivated organizations.
