Conservative commentator Milo Yiannopoulos, a British national, has been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents for overstaying his visa and now faces potential permanent exclusion from the United States, according to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announcement regarding his apprehension.
Yiannopoulos, who legally entered the U.S. through New York City on May 14, 2019, chose to disregard the nation's immigration statutes by remaining in the country beyond the period he was lawfully permitted.
The DHS statement accompanying the news of his arrest underscored the grave consequences for those who flout immigration rules, contrasting it with an offer for other foreign nationals.
“Being in detention is a choice. We encourage all illegal aliens to take control of their departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering illegal aliens $3,000 and a free flight to self-deport now,” DHS stated. This offer, the agency suggests, allows individuals to “preserve their ability to return legally.”
The warning continued, highlighting the stark choice for those in the country unlawfully: “We encourage every person here illegally to take advantage of this offer and reserve the chance to come back to the U.S. the right legal way to live the American dream. If not, you will be arrested and deported without a chance to return.”
While DHS did not explicitly declare Yiannopoulos would be permanently barred, the context of the warning strongly implied he has forfeited the opportunity to return. His case stands as a sharp reminder that American immigration law is meant to be enforced, regardless of public profile.
ICE agents apprehended Yiannopoulos at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Louisiana on August 27. An immigration judge had previously issued a final order for his removal on July 22, after Yiannopoulos failed to appear for a scheduled immigration hearing. He will remain in ICE custody until his removal from the country is completed.
