Sen. Bernie Sanders found himself in an uncomfortable spotlight this week after clashing with Republican protesters outside the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) headquarters in Washington, D.C., where top Democrats were meeting with controversial Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner.
Video obtained by Fox News Digital shows Republican staffers from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) and the Republican National Committee (RNC) staging a protest outside the building. The demonstrators wore towels around their waists, mocking a sexually suggestive Kik profile photo allegedly linked to Platner that showed him shirtless with a towel wrapped around his waist.
As Sanders arrived, protesters questioned him about Democratic support for Platner, who has been at the center of multiple controversies in recent weeks.
“Do you support Graham Platner even though he's on Kik?” one protester asked Sanders as the Vermont senator entered the building.
The confrontation came as Platner met with Democratic leaders ahead of Maine’s June 9 Senate primary. Despite the growing controversies surrounding his campaign, Platner remains a leading figure in the race and continues to receive attention from prominent Democrats.
The protest highlighted what Republicans view as a contradiction between Democratic rhetoric and the candidates they choose to support. Critics have argued that Democratic leaders are quick to lecture Americans about values and morality while standing behind candidates facing serious questions about their conduct. Apparently, those standards can become surprisingly flexible when political power is on the line.
As the primary draws closer, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on Platner and the Democratic establishment rallying around him. Maine voters will soon have the final say, and as history has shown, voters tend to notice when actions and words fail to match.
