Senior Democrat Breaks Ranks, Praises Trump for Capture of ‘Illegitimate’ Maduro

In a rare moment of clarity that cut against her party’s predictable outrage cycle, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a South Florida Democrat, publicly praised President Donald Trump’s capture of socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro — a move that sent shockwaves through Washington and, apparently, through Democratic talking points.

Wasserman Schultz, whose district includes a large Venezuelan population that fled Maduro’s rule, called the U.S. military operation “welcome news” for millions of Venezuelans living in exile. While she noted that Congress should have been informed — because in Washington there’s always a procedural complaint — her message was unmistakable: removing Maduro was the right thing to do.

“The capture of the brutal, illegitimate ruler of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, who oppressed Venezuela’s people is welcome news for my friends and neighbors who fled his violent, lawless, and disastrous rule,” Wasserman Schultz wrote on X. Strong words — and notably accurate ones.

The former DNC chair went further, calling for a “liberated Venezuela” governed democratically. She cautioned that “cutting off the head of a snake is fruitless if it just regrows,” adding that this action gives Venezuelans a real opportunity to install their “true, democratically elected president,” Edmundo González. Not exactly the language of Trump Derangement Syndrome.

Another Florida Democrat, Rep. Darren Soto, echoed that sentiment, describing the operation as a “major step towards a #VenezuelaLibre.” He, too, criticized Trump for not seeking congressional approval — a familiar refrain — despite the administration’s position that such approval was not required.

Elsewhere, however, the usual chorus of outrage from congressional Democrats wasted no time. Some went so far as to label the operation illegal and reckless, with Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego calling it an “unjustified war” and California Sen. Adam Schiff warning about America’s standing on the world stage. Dramatic statements, to be sure — even as the administration has not declared the United States to be at war with Venezuela.

Republicans pushed back forcefully against that narrative, emphasizing that this was a targeted law-enforcement and national security operation, not a war. The Trump administration has not indicated it is pursuing additional military action.

Florida Republicans, particularly those representing Venezuelan-American communities, were unequivocal in their support. Rep. María Elvira Salazar declared that “Maduro’s narco-dictatorship has ENDED,” stating that the “narcoterrorist” who exported crime and terror will now face justice in the United States. Sen. Rick Scott called the operation “peace through strength on full display,” saying America and the world are safer because of it.

That message resonates deeply in South Florida, home to the largest Venezuelan diaspora in the country. In cities like Doral, where roughly 40% of residents are of Venezuelan descent, Maduro’s fall is not an abstract foreign policy debate — it’s personal.

When even senior Democrats are acknowledging the reality of Maduro’s brutality and the legitimacy of Trump’s decisive action, it says something important. Leadership matters. Strength matters. And for Venezuelans who have waited years for accountability and freedom, this moment represents real hope — and a future that finally looks brighter.
