Sheriff Says Kidnapping of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother May Have Been Targeted

A disturbing kidnapping case connected to the family of NBC “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie is raising serious concerns in an upscale Arizona community — and investigators believe they may finally understand what motivated the suspect.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said authorities now believe the kidnapping of Guthrie’s mother may have been a targeted act. However, investigators are still working to confirm that theory as the case remains under active investigation.

“We believe we know why he did this and we believe that it was targeted,” Nanos said in an interview with NBC News. Still, he made it clear that investigators are not yet completely certain.

In other words, they have a strong idea of what happened — but they’re still putting the final pieces together.

According to the sheriff, the suspected perpetrator may have specifically targeted the Guthrie family. However, because authorities cannot fully confirm that conclusion yet, law enforcement officials are warning residents not to assume there is no broader risk.

“It’d be silly to tell people, ‘Yeah, don’t worry about it. You’re not his target,’” Nanos said.

As a result, authorities have increased patrols in the Catalina Foothills area of Pima County, the upscale neighborhood north of Tucson where the Guthrie family home is located. The community is known for large homes and historically low crime rates — which makes an incident like this especially alarming for residents.

Sheriff Nanos urged neighbors to stay alert and take basic precautions while investigators continue reviewing evidence and following multiple leads.

“Don’t think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you’re safe,” he warned.

For now, officials have not released additional details about the suspect or the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, citing the ongoing investigation. Authorities are continuing to piece together a timeline and determine whether the suspect had any direct connection to the Guthrie family.

Law enforcement is asking anyone with information that may help investigators to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

While the situation is still unfolding, one thing remains clear: local authorities are actively working to understand what happened and ensure the safety of the community — a reminder that vigilance and strong law enforcement remain essential in keeping neighborhoods secu
