White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller decimated the “stupid white hippies” protesting President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown in Washington, D.C., outside of Union Station.
Protesters gathered outside of the famous landmark during Miller’s visit alongside Vice President J.D. Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who were viewing the progress of Trump’s federal takeover of Washington. Miller stated that these “crazy communists” declaring that Washington be freed have “no connection” to the nation’s capital and cannot convince residents they are not in danger.
“The voices that you hear out there, those crazy communists, they have no roots, they have no connection to this city. They have no families they are raising in this city. They have no one they are sending to school in this city. They have no jobs in this city. They have no connections to this community at all,” Miller said. “But they’re the ones that are advocating for the one percent, the criminals, the killers, the rapists, the drug dealers. And I’m glad they’re here today. Because me, Pete and the vice president are all going to leave here and inspired by that we are going to add thousands more resources to this city to get the criminals and the gang members out of here.”
“We’re gonna dismantle those networks and we’re gonna prove that a city can serve for the law-abiding citizens who live there,” Miller continued. “We are not gonna let the communists destroy a great American city, let along the nation’s capital. And let’s also just address one other thing. All of these demonstrators that you’ve seen out here in recent days, all of these elderly white hippies, they’re not part of this city and never have been … We’re gonna ignore these stupid white hippies that all need to go home and take a nap because they are all over 90 years old, and we’re gonna get back to the business of protecting the American people and the citizens of Washington, D.C.”
Trump’s federal takeover of Washington has led to 550 arrests since the start of the crackdown on Aug. 11. A large percentage of the arrests have involved illegal immigrants, including an MS-13 gang member who had prior convictions for driving while intoxicated (DWI) and drug possession, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Tuesday.
The MPD claims that violent crime decreased 26% since 2024, though it excludes felony and aggravated assault from its database. The FBI’s data, which includes aggravated and felony assault, shows that violent crime has only decreased 10% since 2024.
The department had faced accusations of manipulating its crime statistics. In May, the MPD suspended a police commander and investigated whether he downplayed violent crime statistics in the nation’s capital.
Washington had the fourth-highest murder rate in the U.S. in 2024 and witnessed more high-profile murders in 2025, including the shooting of two Israeli staffers outside of the Capital Jewish Museum in May.
