TalaWEAKo? Where's James? Trump and Paxton Demand Answers as Texas Dem Vanishes from Crucial Senate Race

A critical Texas Senate race is entering its final, decisive weeks, yet one of its key contenders, Democrat challenger James Talarico, has seemingly vanished from the public campaign trail, raising immediate and sharp questions from America First leaders including President Donald Trump and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

For nearly two weeks, Talarico has been "missing in action," a prolonged absence that has not only prompted a volley of attacks from Republicans but also stirred concern within his own volunteer network. In a closely watched contest, such an extended disappearance from public view is, to say the least, peculiar.

President Trump himself took to Truth Social, mincing no words on the situation:

Ken Paxton leads Trump rally crowd in 'Where is Talarico?' chant over Democrat's campaign absence

"TalaFREAKo has been missing for 12 days! Now, after looking for him throughout all of Texas, and beyond, probably even weirder places than anyone would think possible, he put out a statement that he has the 'flu.' 12 days is a long time to rid yourself of the so-called flu bug," Trump wrote Wednesday. "What’s going on? We need a Senator that’s a proven Champion like one that has been, without question, the Greatest Attorney General in the History of Texas, and one of the Greatest in the U.S.A."

Trump's strong words came on the heels of Attorney General Ken Paxton directly questioning his opponent's whereabouts during a rally in San Antonio, leading the crowd in a chant of, "Where is James Talarico?" Conservative radio host Ben Ferguson further amplified the concerns, noting on "The Will Cain Show," "Why have we not gotten transparency from his campaign? What is really going on? Why did a guy disappear after doing an interview where he didn't look like he had the flu?"

James Talarico speaks at a campaign event

Talarico's campaign has cited a case of the flu, combined with his Type 1 diabetes, as the reason for his prolonged absence. His last publicly documented in-person campaign event in Texas was on September 26th. While the campaign says Talarico expects to return this weekend for a CNN town hall, his virtual participation in a September 30th business forum after a private New York fundraiser only adds to the questions about transparency and public engagement in a high-stakes election.

Even more telling are the revelations from The New York Post, which reported on leaked messages from Talarico's private volunteer Slack channel. These messages reveal internal worries, with one volunteer admitting, "I’m just worried about him losing momentum." Another attempted to downplay it, claiming, "It’s a buncha people that don’t actually want him to be out touring that are causing a stink. No one’s genuinely upset." This internal discord exposes a crack in the campaign's unified front.

State Representative James Talarico, a Democrat from Texas and U.S. Senate candidate, is hugged by a supporter during a Juneteenth march in Fort Worth, Texas.

The campaign spokesperson, JT Ennis, deflected criticism by stating, "Ken Paxton has been ignoring Texans this entire campaign, and his priorities are clear: he doesn’t answer to the people of this state — he answers to his billionaire megadonors and special interests." Such an attempt to shift focus, rather than provide clear answers on the candidate's absence, only fuels further skepticism.

Veteran Democratic strategist Ed Espinoza attempted to smooth over the situation, suggesting that a rested candidate is preferable and highlighting the campaign's ad spending: "Even though Talarico’s off the trail, he’s still on the airwaves. He’s got plenty of money to get his message out." However, for voters, there's no substitute for a visible, engaged candidate actively campaigning and answering questions directly, especially in a race that will define the future of Texas.

In a pivotal election where every day on the campaign trail counts, the disappearance of a major candidate for nearly two weeks is not just a curiosity; it's a profound test of accountability and transparency. Texans deserve a senator who is present, engaged, and ready to fight for their interests, not one shrouded in a cloud of mystery, leaving President Trump and concerned voters to wonder: "What is going on?" The America First movement demands visible leadership, and a candidate's absence from the public square, especially when challenged by his own side, speaks volumes about his commitment to the people.
