A quiet Texas home became the scene of an unimaginable tragedy Thursday morning when deputies arrived to find two brothers suffering from gunshot wounds—and their mother now facing two capital murder charges.
Colleen Nichole Lemmon, 42, has been arrested after Ellis County authorities determined she was responsible for the shooting deaths of her two sons inside their Waxahachie residence, according to the Ellis County Sheriff's Office and local reporting.
The victims were 21-year-old Christopher Scott Pitre and his 15-year-old brother. Pitre was pronounced dead at the scene. His younger brother was rushed to a local hospital in serious condition but later died from his injuries. Authorities have not publicly released the teenager's name.
The circumstances surrounding the killings remain under investigation, but the initial account is deeply disturbing.
According to the search-warrant affidavit described in local reporting, Ellis County dispatchers received a 911 call that disconnected. When dispatchers managed to reconnect with the caller, a woman reportedly said that “all units” were needed before the call disconnected again.
When deputies arrived at the mobile home, they heard a woman yelling for additional officers and saying she had a gun in her hand.
That woman was Lemmon.
Investigators say deputies found her with blood on her hands. Inside the residence, officers reportedly encountered Lemmon in the living room, covered in blood, with a firearm nearby. The affidavit also described cuts on her wrists that appeared to be self-inflicted.
Then came the statement that investigators say tied her directly to the shootings.
“I shot both of my kids,” Lemmon told deputies, according to the affidavit.
She reportedly directed officers toward the bedrooms, where deputies found both sons suffering from gunshot wounds to the head.
Pitre was already dead.
His younger brother was still alive and was transported to a hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
Investigators subsequently said evidence gathered during the investigation established probable cause to identify Lemmon as the person responsible for the shootings.
She survived her own injuries, which authorities described as non-life-threatening, and was taken to a hospital before being booked into the Ellis County Jail on two counts of capital murder. Her bond was pending arraignment in the initial report from FOX 4.
The motive remains unknown.
Authorities have not explained what led to the shootings or what happened inside the home before the 911 call. That leaves investigators with the difficult task of reconstructing the events that turned a family home into a double-homicide scene.
Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman expressed condolences to the victims' family.
“My deepest sympathies go out to the victims’ father, family members, and loved ones involved in this tragic incident. They will remain in our prayers during this difficult time,” Norman said.
And prayers are certainly appropriate.
Whatever ultimately emerges about the circumstances, two young men are dead, a family has been shattered, and a community is left trying to understand how something so horrific could happen inside an ordinary home.
The case also comes amid several recent high-profile investigations involving parents accused of violence against their own children. But each case must ultimately be judged on its own evidence, and authorities have not suggested that the Waxahachie shootings are connected to any other incident.
For now, the central facts are painfully simple: two brothers are dead, their mother has been charged with killing them, and investigators still have unanswered questions about why.
Those questions now belong to the courts and investigators. The victims' family, meanwhile, is left with a loss no courtroom can undo.
