Tragedy Strikes Pennsylvania Skies: Small Plane Pilot Killed in Collision with State Police Helicopter, Troopers Survive Near-Miracle Escape

CARLISLE, Pa. — A horrific mid-air collision Wednesday evening near Carlisle, Pennsylvania, claimed the life of a civilian pilot and shredded a small plane, yet, by what many are calling a sheer miracle, two Pennsylvania State Police troopers aboard their helicopter survived the violent impact and subsequent crash landing.

The incident, which unfolded near a runway at a small airport, involved a state police Bell 407 helicopter and a Cessna 150, typically a two-seat trainer aircraft. Lt. Col. George Bivens, the state's acting police commissioner, painted a grim picture, describing how the civilian plane, approaching the runway, veered into the helicopter that was near the ground. "When I say it was a very violent crash, that plane was cut into a lot of pieces," Bivens stated during a news conference, underscoring the severity of the impact. Investigators are working to confirm the pilot was the sole occupant of the Cessna.

Inside the wreckage of the helicopter, both state police pilots found themselves trapped. Their harrowing escape unfolded as one trooper managed to push out a window, then assisted the other to safety through the same opening. The helicopter had been engaged in a training exercise at the time of the collision, a routine mission that nearly turned catastrophic for the men in uniform. "Tonight could’ve been much worse," said Governor Josh Shapiro. "Tonight could’ve been much more tragic for our state police family."

Federal investigators from the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have descended on the scene near Carlisle, about 110 miles northwest of Philadelphia, to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to the devastating collision. While the FAA and NTSB referred to it as a midair collision, state police did not clarify if the plane was off the ground at the moment of impact.

Officials are withholding the identity of the deceased pilot until next of kin can be informed, a somber reminder of the human cost of such incidents. The images circulating from Carlisle showed a helicopter on its side amidst a debris field — a stark tableau of destruction and a powerful testament to the risks taken by those who serve and train to protect our communities. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in aviation, and the courage of our first responders dedicated to public safety.
