Trans Athlete Wins Girls’ State Title in West Virginia Ahead of Expected Supreme Court Ruling

A transgender high school athlete in West Virginia won a girls’ state track and field championship over the weekend, drawing renewed attention to a national debate over sports eligibility rules as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to weigh in on a related state law.

Becky Pepper-Jackson, a 15-year-old sophomore at Bridgeport High School and the only openly transgender student athlete competing in the state, took first place in the girls’ Class AAA shot put competition.

Pepper-Jackson recorded a personal best throw of 38 feet, 11.75 inches, securing the state title. The second-place finisher trailed with a throw of 36 feet, 11 inches.

The result comes at a politically charged moment, as the Supreme Court is expected to rule on a West Virginia law that would prohibit biological males from competing in female sports categories. The case has become part of a broader national dispute over fairness in school athletics and how states define eligibility standards.

Supporters of such laws argue they are necessary to preserve competitive balance in girls’ sports and ensure equal opportunities for biological female athletes. Opponents argue that restrictions on transgender participation raise issues of inclusion and discrimination.

The case continues to draw strong reactions from both sides of the political spectrum, with state policies and federal court rulings increasingly shaping how schools handle athletic participation rules across the country.

As the Supreme Court prepares its decision, similar disputes in other states suggest the issue will remain a major point of contention in education and sports policy nationwide.
