TRUMP ADMINISTRATION EXPANDS BAN ON FOREIGN NATIONALS ACCESSING SMALL BUSINESS LOANS

The Trump administration is taking another step to ensure federal small business funding goes where many Americans believe it always should have gone in the first place — to American citizens building businesses here at home.

On Monday, the Small Business Administration announced it will expand restrictions preventing foreign nationals from accessing federally backed small business loan programs.

The decision means foreign nationals will now be barred from receiving funding through additional SBA programs, including the agency’s Surety Bond program and its Microloan program, which provides loans of up to $50,000 for small businesses and nonprofit childcare centers.

SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler made the administration’s priorities clear in a statement announcing the policy.

“The Trump SBA is committed to driving economic growth and job creation for American citizens,” Loeffler said.

She explained that the agency had already moved last month to prevent foreign nationals from accessing its primary small business loan programs. The new decision expands that rule to cover all SBA-guaranteed loans.

In other words, if federal dollars are involved, the focus will now be squarely on American entrepreneurs — a concept that, frankly, sounds pretty logical to most taxpayers.

“With our lending authority capped annually by Congress and amid record demand for access to capital, our responsibility is clear,” Loeffler said. “The limited resource of SBA financing must prioritize American citizens who are building businesses and creating jobs here at home.”

The change comes as demand for small business financing continues to grow across the country.

According to agency data, during Fiscal Year 2025 the SBA approved nearly 85,000 loans. Of those, almost 3,400 loans went to businesses partially owned by foreign nationals, accounting for roughly four percent of the total approvals.

The administration’s new policy aims to ensure that future funding goes directly toward supporting American workers, American entrepreneurs, and American job creation.

For many supporters of the policy, the message is simple: when taxpayer-backed resources are limited, prioritizing citizens who are investing in their communities and creating jobs across the country just makes sense.

And for countless small business owners working hard to build the next great American success story, policies like this send a clear signal that their government is finally putting them first.
