President Donald Trump unloaded on late-night host Bill Maher Saturday in a fiery post on Truth Social, saying it was a “total waste of time” to host him at the White House earlier this year.
Trump’s comments came after Maher mocked him for joking that China could end all hockey in Canada as economic ties deepen between the two countries. Apparently, sarcasm is only allowed on Maher’s show—everyone else has to put up a disclaimer.
“Sometimes in life you waste time!” Trump wrote, explaining that Maher asked to have dinner with him through a mutual friend. Trump agreed, and the comedian arrived at the Oval Office “much different” than expected. According to Trump, Maher was extremely nervous, showed “ZERO confidence,” and quickly asked for a vodka tonic to calm himself down.
Maher even admitted he was scared, Trump said, which the president described as “somewhat endearing.” Not exactly the fearless critic viewers see on TV.

Trump said the two had a great dinner and that Maher initially spoke respectfully about the meeting on his show, Real Time with Bill Maher. But that didn’t last long. The president noted that Maher soon returned to his usual anti-Trump routine, ignoring what Trump called major accomplishments like a secure border, historic crime lows, mass removal of violent criminals, record stock market highs, low inflation, rebuilding the military, and multiple war stoppages. Funny how success never seems to make the highlight reel.
Trump said the breaking point came when Maher focused on his joke about China eliminating hockey in Canada, acting as if it were a serious policy proposal. Trump explained that he was joking after discussing what he called disastrous Canadian leadership and unfair trade practices. But Maher “went on and on” about the hockey remark, portraying it as foolish.

Fortunately, Trump added, Maher’s television ratings are so low that “nobody will learn” about what he called Maher’s fake news statements. Ouch—straight from the Oval Office to the comedy graveyard.
The president said Maher is “no different than Kimmel, Fallon, or Colbert,” though he admitted Maher is “slightly more talented” than the others. High praise by late-night standards.
Trump also claimed Maher asked to come back to the White House with a friend after their first meeting and even wanted an invitation to the White House Christmas party, though he ultimately did not attend.
Trump closed by saying he would rather spend his time “MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” than dealing with Maher, accusing the host of suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome. He thanked readers for their attention to what he called a “minor matter.”
Once again, the president made clear that while comedians can throw punches from studio desks, he’s too busy running the country to worry about punchlines. And judging by the energy in his post, he’s doing just fine without late-night approval.
