President Donald Trump delivered a blunt message to Iran on Thursday, making it clear that the days of hiding behind terrorist proxies are over. If the Iran-backed Houthi rebels resume attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, Trump said, the United States will hold Tehran directly responsible—and the consequences will be severe.

The warning came after the Houthis claimed responsibility for attacking two Saudi oil tankers overnight, raising fresh concerns about security in one of the world's most vital maritime trade routes.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump pointed to the success of last year's U.S. military campaign against the Houthis, saying the strikes had effectively restored deterrence before the latest escalation.

"A year ago the United States of America attacked, very powerfully, the Houthis, for their interference with commerce and trade, by shooting at ships," Trump wrote. "If they do this again, the U.S. will hold Iran responsible, in that the Houthis are a Surrogate and/or Proxy of Iran, and major military punishment will be inflicted upon Iran and, of course, the Houthis, themselves."

Trump also noted that the Houthis had behaved "very responsibly" following the U.S. operation until the latest attacks, signaling that Washington believes Tehran's influence remains central to the group's actions.

For years, Iran has been accused of providing weapons, training, and financial support to the Houthis, allowing the militant group to threaten international shipping lanes while giving Tehran a layer of plausible deniability. Trump's warning cuts through that distinction, declaring that future attacks by Iran's proxy will be treated as actions for which the Iranian regime itself will be accountable.
