In an unexpected but undeniably powerful political moment, Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas — yes, a Democrat — publicly praised President Donald Trump after receiving a full and unconditional pardon. And let’s just say, the man didn’t hold back when calling out what he described as the Biden-era Department of Justice’s “weaponization” against him.
Appearing on Special Report, Cuellar made it clear he believes his prosecution wasn’t just coincidence.
“I did speak against the Biden administration about open borders… Absolutely it was weaponized,” he told Fox News’ Bret Baier.
Well, imagine that — criticize the open-border chaos and suddenly the DOJ remembers your name. Shocking.
President Trump’s pardon covers both Cuellar and his wife Imelda, who were awaiting trial on allegations of bribery and money laundering tied to foreign entities, including an Azerbaijani state-owned oil company and a Mexican bank. The DOJ accused them of taking around $600,000 during a seven-year period — accusations the couple continues to firmly deny.
Grateful and visibly relieved, Cuellar didn’t mince words:
“I want to thank President Trump for pardoning. God has been good to my wife, to my family… thank you, President Trump.”
Not something you hear every day from a Democrat — but hey, truth has a funny way of escaping party lines.
Cuellar explained he had obtained legal and ethical opinions before any of the alleged work took place. He also said he sympathizes with Trump’s own battle against what many Americans recognize as politically motivated prosecutions.
“I think it was very unfair… I don’t want to wish anybody to go through this type of weaponization,” he said.
Hard to disagree there — the pattern is getting a little obvious.
When asked how the pardon happened, Cuellar declined specifics. “I’m not going to second-guess the president… President Trump, thank you.”
A rare moment of humility in Washington — must’ve felt refreshing.
Cuellar has represented Texas’ 28th District since 2005, an area right along the heavily crossed Rio Grande. Unlike many in his party, he’s been openly critical of President Biden’s border failures and even backed Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s migrant busing program. A Democrat supporting tough border security — who would’ve thought?
He confirmed he’ll run again in 2026, embracing the “conservative Democrat” label. He insists he’ll remain in his party but admits liberal Democrats “are still going to have a problem” with him because he works with Republicans.
“I think I vote better than some of the Republicans in the caucus,” he added — a little sarcasm never hurt anyone.
Despite his 2024 indictment, Cuellar won re-election by over 10,000 votes. He says it’s because he attracts independents and “modern Republicans” who cross over.
“And I will get that again,” he said confidently.
In the end, what’s clear is this: even across party lines, people are recognizing when justice is being twisted into a political weapon — and they’re not afraid to say so. And thanks to President Trump’s decisive action, one family is getting a fresh start and a chance to continue serving their community. Always good to see justice corrected in the right direction.
