Trump Says G7 Talks with Zelensky and Putin Were Productive as Focus Returns to Ukraine

President Donald Trump said Wednesday at the G7 summit that he had productive conversations with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin as he continues efforts aimed at bringing the war in Ukraine to an end.

Trump made the remarks during a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after being asked whether momentum from the Iran agreement could carry over into progress on Ukraine.

Responding to the question, Trump said he had “very good talks” with both leaders and expressed his desire to see the conflict concluded.

Trump noted that he has pointed to ending multiple international conflicts and said he initially believed reaching an agreement in Ukraine would be more straightforward than it has become.

“I ended eight wars, and to be honest with you, I thought this would have been one of the easier ones,” Trump said, before adding that tensions between the two sides have made negotiations more difficult.

He emphasized that he had two positive conversations with both Zelensky and Putin and suggested diplomacy remains active despite the challenges.

The comments followed Trump’s statement Tuesday that, with Iran now “in the rear view mirror,” his attention had returned to resolving the war in Ukraine.

International negotiations rarely cooperate with expectations — apparently even when everyone agrees peace sounds better than conflict, getting there still requires more than a calendar invite.

For supporters watching the talks, the focus now turns to whether continued dialogue can create momentum toward a negotiated outcome and move one of the world’s biggest conflicts closer to resolution.
