Trump Slams 'Corrupt' Letitia James Amid Mounting Bias Concerns in High-Stakes Cornell Case

New York Attorney General Letitia James is once again under intense scrutiny, facing direct questions about her impartiality in a high-profile sexual assault investigation at Cornell University. The controversy deepened significantly after President Donald Trump delivered a scathing assessment of James's fitness to lead the probe, echoing long-standing concerns about her politicized approach to justice.

James, who on Friday vowed a "fair" investigation into seven defendants accused in the alleged fraternity party assault, finds her promise of objectivity challenged by her own prior public statements and the legal actions of defense teams. This comes as the case has drawn national attention, thrusting the Ivy League's handling of campus sexual assault into the spotlight.

The allegations of bias gained momentum after Governor Kathy Hochul appointed James as special prosecutor. Days before her appointment, James had posted on X (formerly Twitter) in support of the alleged victim, identified in court filings as Jane Doe.

"What this young woman has been forced to endure is horrific and unacceptable. I’m holding her in my heart and in my prayers," James declared on X on September 28th. "To her, and to all survivors: you’re not alone. We stand with you."

This public display of advocacy, made before she was tasked with impartially prosecuting the case, immediately raised red flags. Defense attorneys Andrew Miltenberg and Teny Geragos have since moved to have James removed, with Geragos asserting in a court filing that James is "unquestionably biased."

President Trump, a long-time critic of James, did not mince words when asked about her role in the Cornell case. His blunt assessment cut to the core of the issue:

"Letitia James is a corrupt person," Trump stated unequivocally. "She’s totally corrupt, and I can’t imagine it. And I feel badly for whoever she’s looking at because they won’t get a fair shake. Letitia James is a corrupt person."

Such a direct accusation from a former President, himself a target of James's relentless legal pursuits, amplifies the serious questions about the integrity of the investigation.

Despite the mounting criticism, Governor Hochul has publicly defended her appointment, expressing "every confidence" that James will "look at the facts, examine the record and draw the proper conclusions." James herself has attempted to downplay her pre-appointment comments, framing them as mere "empathy" and insisting that "politics stops at the door" of her office. Yet, for many, the damage to public trust may already be done.

The case itself revolves around allegations from a Cornell student of a gang rape at a Chi Phi fraternity house party in 2024. Interestingly, previous investigations by Cornell University Police and the Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office did not result in criminal charges, with prosecutors concluding that the evidence was insufficient under New York law. This history underscores the complexity of the case and further highlights the need for an utterly impartial prosecutor.

Cornell University did conduct its own Title IX investigation, leading to disciplinary actions against several of the seven defendants, including the expulsion of two students and the suspension of two others. However, the criminal investigation remains distinct, governed by different standards of proof and demanding absolute objectivity from the state's highest law enforcement officer.

The fundamental principle of impartial justice demands that those in power, especially prosecutors, act without even the appearance of bias. When a top state official, known for her political crusades, makes public declarations of support for one side before taking over a criminal investigation, it erodes the public's faith in the fairness of the system. President Trump's strong words resonate with many Americans who expect law and order to be upheld by justice, not by political agendas or pre-judged outcomes. The nation watches to see if true justice, free from partisan influence, will prevail in this critical case.
