U.S. Strikes Drug Boat Loading Facility in Venezuela, Trump Says

President Donald Trump announced Monday that the United States has struck a key drug-loading area in Venezuela, signaling a sharp escalation in pressure against the Maduro regime and a clear message to narcotraffickers who have long treated the country as a safe haven.

“There was a major explosion in the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs,” Trump said, describing the strike in blunt terms. “We hit all the boats, and now we hit the area… it’s the implementation area. That’s where they implement, and that is no longer around.” Subtlety, as usual, was not required.

While Trump did not specify exactly which U.S. agency carried out the operation or what precise target was hit, he made it clear the action was deliberate and successful. Asked whether the CIA was responsible, Trump responded that he knew exactly who carried it out but declined to say—an answer that only fueled speculation, especially given his previous statements authorizing the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela.

U.S. officials, including the White House, the Pentagon, and the CIA, declined to elaborate on Trump’s comments, and the Venezuelan government has remained silent. There have been no independent confirmations from inside Venezuela, which, given the nature of covert operations, is hardly shocking.

Trump had hinted at such an operation last week during a radio interview, referring vaguely to action taken against a “big facility” in Venezuela. Online rumors attempted to link his comments to a Christmas Eve fire at the Primazol chemical plant in Zulia state, but the company denied any connection, stating the fire was quickly extinguished and under investigation. Local residents reported hearing an explosion and smelling chlorine, but Primazol insisted it was not the incident Trump described.

The Trump administration has consistently highlighted its success in targeting drug trafficking vessels, with the Pentagon previously releasing footage of U.S. strikes on suspected narcotics operations. The lack of public confirmation from national security agencies has only reinforced the likelihood that this latest strike was conducted covertly—operations that, by design, don’t come with press releases.

Reuters reported last month that the U.S. was preparing to launch a new phase of operations related to Venezuela as Trump ramps up pressure on President Nicolas Maduro’s government. At the time, U.S. officials indicated that covert actions would likely be the opening move.

The broader U.S. mission has focused heavily on disrupting drug trafficking, particularly through military strikes against suspected smuggling vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific. Those operations have drawn scrutiny from Congress, especially after reports that more than 100 people have been killed in over 20 strikes. Democrats have questioned the legality of certain follow-up strikes, though the administration has stood by its actions.

Under Trump, the U.S. has also carried out a massive military buildup in the Caribbean, deploying more than 15,000 troops as part of its regional pressure campaign.

The message from Trump is unmistakable: Venezuela will not be allowed to function as a drug export hub with impunity. Whether done overtly or quietly, the administration is taking action, hitting traffickers where it hurts, and reminding the world that American resolve still means something. For those who profit from chaos and narcotics, the days of free passes are clearly numbered—and that’s a step in the right direction.
