UK Allows U.S. to Use Military Bases for Iran-Related Strikes

The United Kingdom has authorized the United States to use British military bases to conduct strikes targeting Iranian missile sites threatening shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a statement from 10 Downing Street, the decision came after a meeting of senior ministers, who agreed that U.S. operations carried out from UK bases would fall under “collective self-defense” aimed at degrading Iran’s missile capabilities.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer had previously resisted such requests, emphasizing the need to ensure any military involvement complied with international law. However, his position shifted after Iran launched attacks affecting British allies in the region.

The authorization includes the use of key installations such as RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia, a strategically important joint base in the Indian Ocean.

Iran strongly condemned the move. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized the UK government, claiming the decision puts British lives at risk and warning that Iran would exercise its right to self-defense.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the UK for what he described as a delayed response, noting the historically close alliance between the two countries.

Despite the decision, the UK government reiterated that it does not seek a broader war and remains committed to protecting its national interests while avoiding deeper involvement in the escalating conflict.
