US Launches New Defensive Strike on Iran as Trump Says Tehran Is ‘Negotiating on Fumes’

The United States carried out another military strike against Iran on Wednesday after American forces intercepted multiple Iranian attack drones near the Strait of Hormuz, further escalating tensions in the nearly three-month-long conflict.

According to U.S. officials, American forces operating under U.S. Central Command shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones that posed a threat in the region surrounding the critical shipping corridor.

Officials also confirmed that U.S. forces struck an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas that was reportedly preparing to launch a fifth drone before it could become operational.

The officials spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to publicly discuss operational details.

The latest military action came only hours after President Donald Trump declared that Iran is now “negotiating on fumes” following severe damage to its military capabilities during the conflict.

Speaking during a Cabinet meeting Wednesday, Trump projected confidence that negotiations could eventually lead to a settlement, though he made clear the United States is not rushing toward an agreement.

“They want very much to make a deal,” Trump said earlier in the day. “We’re not satisfied with it. But we will be. Either that or we’ll have to just finish the job.”

Trump has repeatedly argued that Iran’s military infrastructure has been devastated during the conflict, claiming Tehran’s navy and air force have been largely crippled.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically important waterways on Earth, with roughly one-fifth of global oil shipments moving through the narrow passage. Any military activity in the region immediately raises concerns about energy prices, shipping disruptions, and broader instability across global markets.

Iranian drones operating near the strait have become a major concern for U.S. forces and allied nations, particularly after repeated threats from Tehran involving shipping lanes and maritime traffic.

The latest strike also follows the White House’s rejection of Iranian state media reports claiming the two countries were close to signing a memorandum of understanding involving Hormuz shipping access and military withdrawals. Administration officials dismissed those reports as “a complete fabrication.”

For supporters of the administration, Wednesday’s events reinforce Trump’s strategy of combining diplomacy with overwhelming military pressure. Conservatives argue Iran only appears interested in serious negotiations after facing sustained military losses and growing economic strain.

Critics, meanwhile, continue warning about the possibility of broader escalation in the Middle East. But the administration maintains that decisive action and strength are precisely what prevent adversaries from pushing further.

And while diplomats continue talking behind the scenes, the situation on the ground sends a very different message: the United States is still actively engaging Iranian threats in real time while making clear that negotiations alone will not stop military responses when American forces are targeted.

Under Trump’s approach, peace talks may continue — but the drones still get shot down first.
