Chinese military aircraft that routinely fly near Taiwan have suddenly become far less active, raising questions among analysts about what might be behind the unusual slowdown.
For years, the air force of China has sent fighter jets and surveillance planes toward Taiwan on a near-daily basis, often entering the island’s air defense identification zone in what many see as an attempt to intimidate Taipei and test its defenses.
Recently, however, that activity has dropped off sharply.
The sudden lull has sparked speculation that broader geopolitical developments could be influencing Beijing’s behavior. One theory is that Chinese leaders may be trying to project a calmer image ahead of a potential meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump expected later this month.
Another possibility is that recent U.S. military operations abroad have caught Beijing’s attention.
Washington has launched two major campaigns this year: Operation Absolute Resolve in Venezuela and Operation Epic Fury targeting the leadership and military infrastructure of Iran. The speed and scale of those operations have demonstrated a level of American military capability that some analysts believe China may have underestimated in recent years.
During the previous U.S. administration, critics argued that China increasingly tested boundaries in the region, particularly around Taiwan. Frequent flights of Chinese fighter jets, bombers, and reconnaissance aircraft became one of the most visible forms of pressure on the island.
Now, at least temporarily, that pressure appears to have eased.
Some observers caution that the pause may be strategic rather than permanent. China could simply be lying low before resuming operations, or shifting its military posture while evaluating global developments.
Others believe Beijing may be reassessing its assumptions about U.S. strength and willingness to respond to threats abroad.
Either way, the sudden quiet in the skies near Taiwan is unusual — and in geopolitics, unusual behavior from a major power almost always means something is happening behind the scenes.
