President Donald Trump delivered one of the most emotional moments of his State of the Union address Tuesday night when he honored the parents of murdered Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska — and then publicly called out Democrats for refusing to stand.
“How do you not stand?” the president asked bluntly, after Democrats remained seated while Republicans applauded.
Trump tied the tragedy directly to public safety and what he described as reckless criminal justice policies.
“Unleashing America’s promise requires keeping America safe,” Trump said. “We have made incredible strides, yet dangerous repeat offenders continue to be released by pro-crime Democrat politicians again and again.”
The president then introduced Anna Zarutska, Iryna’s mother, telling the story of how she and her daughter fled war-torn Ukraine in 2022 to live with relatives near Charlotte, North Carolina.
“Last summer, 23-year-old Iryna was riding home on the train when a deranged monster — who had been arrested over a dozen times and released through no-cash bail — stood up and viciously slashed a knife through her neck and body,” Trump said.
Trump referenced the disturbing video footage of the attack that later circulated online.
“No one will ever forget the expression of terror on Iryna’s face as she looked up at her attacker in the last seconds of her life,” he said. “She had escaped a brutal war only to be slain by a hardened criminal, set free to kill in America.”
With Anna Zarutska visibly weeping in the gallery, Trump made her a promise from the floor of Congress.
“We will ensure justice for your magnificent daughter, Iryna,” he said.
The chamber erupted in applause — at least the Republican side did. Democrats remained seated, unmoved, and apparently allergic to honoring grieving parents.
“How do you not stand?” Trump repeated, staring directly at them. “How do you not stand?”
He closed the moment with a call for action.
“I’m asking this Congress to pass tough legislation to ensure that violent and dangerous repeat offenders are put behind bars — and, importantly, that they stay there,” the president said.
While Democrats sat silently, Trump made clear whose side he’s on: the victims, the families, and the law-abiding Americans who just want to ride a train without being murdered by someone who should never have been free in the first place. And that’s a promise this president intends to keep.
