Her sharp warning comes as Spain stood idly by, allowing a massive surge of African migrants to overwhelm its sovereign territory from Morocco, exposing a dangerous vulnerability in European security.
The Spanish enclave of Ceuta is currently enduring its worst migrant crisis since 2021, with thousands of illegal migrants literally swimming into its territory. This chaotic flood unfolded in the wake of a Spanish Supreme Court ruling that inexplicably banned maritime migrant pushbacks at the border – effectively signaling to illegal entrants that the gates were open.
The dramatic situation, which began earlier this week, escalated rapidly, with thousands crossing from Moroccan territory into the European Union's open borders zone within hours.
Ceuta’s local government desperately pleaded for help from Madrid, which only finally deployed its Army on Thursday. Even more damning, the Spanish newspaper El Mundo reports that a mere 55 frontline law enforcement agents were present at Ceuta’s borders when the deluge began. These few officers were, in any case, effectively neutralized by the Supreme Court’s decision, rendering them incapable of meaningful action.
Prime Minister Meloni reacted to the shocking viral footage emerging from the Spanish enclave with unwavering resolve, stating emphatically that the situation demonstrates, "once again," that uncontrolled illegal immigration poses "a concrete threat to the security of Europe’s borders."
Meloni affirmed that Italy "will not stand by and watch."
"We are convening the relevant bodies, and following these meetings, we are prepared to intervene with extraordinary measures to defend the borders and the safety of citizens, including the suspension of the Schengen Area with Spain," Meloni declared.
She continued her powerful statement: "On illegal immigration, we will not yield an inch: defending the borders, stopping human traffickers, and ensuring effective repatriations will continue to be the line of this Government."
Top members of Meloni’s government swiftly expressed their full support for closing Italy’s Schengen open borders area with Spain to counter the unfolding migrant flood. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini stressed in a social media post that it is absolutely right for Italy to suspend the Schengen area to defend its borders and its people.
"Suspend Schengen. Defend the borders," he added, sharing footage from Thursday’s migrant flood at Ceuta.
Similarly, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani backed the suspension of the Schengen Area with Spain, underscoring the severe dangers to national security posed by irregular and uncontrolled migration.
Tajani further noted that the images from Ceuta vividly illustrate how the Spanish government’s widely-reviled decision to grant mass amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants living in Spain is "profoundly wrong and encourages human trafficking."
Unsurprisingly, the common-sense and firm response from the Italian government has visibly angered Spain’s pro-migrant socialist leadership.
Responding to Tajani, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares retorted that his Italian counterpart’s message is "unbecoming of the Foreign Minister of a partner and friendly country from which we expect European solidarity and not partisan demagoguery."
"Today’s events are related to a court ruling, having nothing to do with what the tweet says," Albares defensively claimed. "I have summoned the Italian Ambassador tomorrow."
