‘The Daily Show’ Roasts Newsom Over Homelessness and High-Speed Rail Failures

On Wednesday, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show took aim at California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), mocking his long record on homelessness and the state’s troubled high-speed rail project.

In a segment styled as a fake movie trailer, the show recounted Newsom’s political career while sarcastically highlighting his repeated promises on the same two issues.

“As mayor of San Francisco, part of Newsom’s role was tackling homelessness and high-speed rail,” the narrator said. “Always yearning for a larger part, Newsom soon landed the role of California’s official understudy, lieutenant governor. Now he could focus on exciting new projects, like ending homelessness and building high-speed rail. But as a versatile talent, Newsom was able to tackle these tough issues while also starting a talk show.”

The mock trailer continued by portraying his move to governor as the moment he could finally deliver on those goals.

“But this rising star couldn’t be held down, and soon enough, Gavin ascended to Governor, a role that would finally allow him to tackle important issues like homelessness and high-speed rail,” the voiceover said. “Soon, this futuristic bullet train will take people from the thriving hub of Merced all the way to the shining metropolis of Bakersfield.”

The segment also referenced Newsom’s controversial dinner at the French Laundry during the COVID-19 pandemic. After mentioning the pandemic and the recall election, the narrator joked that Newsom was finally “totally free” to work on his priorities.

“Like high-speed rail and homelessness,” the voiceover added, “and this time he actually made progress because company [the APEC Summit] was coming over.”

The satire underscored ongoing criticism of Newsom’s leadership, particularly over California’s growing homelessness crisis and the high-speed rail project, which has faced massive delays and cost overruns for years.
