In the ever-shifting landscape of radical progressive politics, there’s a consistent pattern: voices of self-proclaimed socialists, captured by cameras and preserved like ancient fossils, always come back to haunt them. For Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, this truth is proving particularly inconvenient.
The New York Democrat, a proud member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), seems to be locked in a perpetual struggle with her own past rhetoric. While her colleagues continue to embrace extreme anti-American positions, AOC is now attempting a carefully choreographed pivot, trying to dismiss her own role in the destructive 'Woke 1.0' era as merely 'crazy.'

Consider the stark contradictions: In 2019, she solemnly warned that climate change would obliterate the world within a mere twelve years unless drastic action was taken. Yet, this week, she cheerfully announced she was freezing her eggs, seemingly convinced that she has all the time in the world to pause biology and run for president. Such an expensive procedure, one might add, for someone who once donned a "Tax the Rich" gown at an exclusive Met Gala where tickets cost more than many Americans earn in a year. Apparently, it's only the other rich who deserve taxation.
She claims socialists have abandoned obscure rhetoric, yet she remains a steadfast DSA member—an organization whose candidates openly treat the American flag as an insult, excuse the horrific 9/11 attacks, and gleefully boast about dismantling the Western empire. In 2021, she indignantly declared 'woke' was a mere euphemism for civil rights, daring anyone to sneer at it as racist. Fast forward to today, and she coyly admits Woke 1 was "crazy," a "silly phase" of "goofy things" she didn't "really mean."
But 'Woke 1.0' was far from a silly phase. It was a genuinely insane and destructive period that poured gasoline on ideological fires across the nation. Pretending otherwise isn't evolution; it's gaslighting, delivered with new, more flattering lighting.
During the peak of this "crazy" phase in 2020, AOC aggressively pushed for defunding the New York Police Department, claiming that billion-dollar cuts weren't nearly enough. A 'defunded-police society,' she explained, would simply look like a "white affluent suburb." Any criticism of this dangerous movement, she insisted, was "pure racial resentment."
The devastating consequences, however, were not suburban tranquility. The 'Defund the Police' movement led to the costliest and deadliest riots in modern American history: an estimated two billion dollars in insured damage, a staggering 30% spike in U.S. homicides, and a mass exodus of police officers that never fully recovered. Millions of dollars in bail funds, enthusiastically sponsored by leftist organizations and cheered on by AOC and her allies, freed murderers, sexual offenders, and other violent criminals back onto American streets.
Beyond law enforcement, AOC tirelessly worked to inject 'Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion' (DEI) into every institution within rhetorical reach. She repeatedly described 'white supremacy' as a "virus"—often subconscious, often dormant—infecting the nation and ordinary individuals. She demanded COVID relief be written "with a lens of reparations" and became a key amplifier of the post-George Floyd worldview that filtered everything through 'systemic oppression,' dismissing color-blind equal treatment as naïve or worse.
The result? A surge of corporate DEI roles, mandatory diversity statements, staffing quotas, and federal 'equity' mandates that have only deepened societal divisions. Perceptions of race relations plummeted to multi-decade lows, and concerns about workplace fairness climbed as Americans grew increasingly skeptical that these preferential DEI processes were about merit at all.
AOC's attempt to laugh off this destructive period as 'youthful exuberance' is not charming. It is nauseating, especially considering that her comrades are not moderating their views. They are radicalizing at breakneck speed.
In the very same interview where AOC tried to reframe 2020 as a 'rebellious teenage phase' rather than a national disgrace, she confirmed her continued membership in the New York City DSA chapter. This is the same chapter that advocates for the outright abolition of police, prisons, the Senate, the presidency, borders, and the Department of Defense. It has spawned candidates who flirt with Sharia law in America, campaign alongside individuals who claim America "deserved" 9/11, and argue that Thanksgiving should be canceled because it's "racist."
Woke 1.0 may be over, but only because the Left has advanced to 'Woke 2.0'—a terrifying sequel where despising America is rebranded as 'patriotism,' where Planned Parenthood redefines abortion as 'gender-affirming care,' where celebrating anti-capitalism is chic, and where leading Democratic candidates openly sympathize with terror, eager to dismantle the country from within.
AOC is clearly attempting to gaslight the American people into perceiving her as a 'moderate communist' who only hates America a little bit, perhaps a political rebranding whispered by consultants eager to secure her a national stage. Her fellow travelers, however, show no signs of moderation. They are devouring the remains of the moderate Democratic Party, pushing a radical agenda that threatens core American values, faith, and common sense. It's time to remember what 'Woke 1.0' wrought and hold the radical left accountable for the escalating extremism that continues to harm our nation.
