President Donald Trump on Monday night celebrated Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s decision to remain on the bench for another term, calling him “one of the greatest of all time.”

“Great news for our Country! Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has announced that he is staying for another Term,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He is one of the Greatest of All Time. We are all lucky!”

The 76-year-old conservative justice confirmed last week in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that he plans to serve through the Court’s upcoming term, which begins in October. “Obviously, I’m here for another term,” Alito said, addressing months of speculation about a possible retirement while Trump is in the White House and Republicans hold the Senate.

Alito, nominated by President George W. Bush and confirmed in 2006, is one of the Court’s most consistently conservative members. He and Justice Clarence Thomas, 78, are the two oldest justices. Some conservatives have urged them to step down to allow Trump to appoint younger successors who could serve for decades.

Alito acknowledged the pressure, telling the Journal it was “not pleasant” and “a reminder of mortality,” comparing the retirement calls to vultures circling, but noting that such attention “goes with life tenure.”

Republicans currently hold a 53-47 Senate majority. A Democratic gain of four seats in the November midterms could make it far more difficult for Trump to confirm a replacement if either Alito or Thomas later retires. Trump appointed three justices—Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett—during his first term, helping create the current 6-3 conservative majority.

For now, Alito’s decision to remain removes one potential vacancy from the immediate political calendar.
