The stark truth about New York’s open-border policies and its contempt for federal law enforcement has just been laid bare. For too long, New York State and City officials have defiantly waved off federal agencies, rolling out the red carpet for illegal aliens, even those accused of serious crimes. While the Big Apple proudly declares itself a sanctuary city, the state, in a thin veil of denial, enacts laws designed to cripple cooperation with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The consequences of this reckless defiance are now tragically clear. Instead of being able to rely on local authorities to hand over dangerous individuals, ICE agents are forced onto the streets, chasing down targets. This dangerous game recently escalated with the incident involving 28-year-old Oscar Belgal, a suspected illegal alien criminal who was shot while attempting to flee federal authorities. The NYPD's own video shows the suspect attempting to 'smash' two cars, painting a vivid picture of the chaos sanctuary policies sow.
While Americans understood that New York routinely rejected ICE detainers, the sheer scale of their obstruction is nothing short of astounding. Since President Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025, New York officials have openly defied ICE by refusing a staggering 16,070 detainer requests. Let that number sink in: sixteen thousand and seventy.
And who exactly are these individuals that Governor Kathy Hochul and Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani are so intent on protecting from federal accountability? The data reveals a horrifying reality: these 16,070 individuals are linked to over 52,503 criminal charges and convictions. This isn't about minor infractions; this is about a systemic failure to protect New Yorkers.
A statement from the Trump Administration cuts through the political noise, declaring, "We enforce these laws with no help from Mayor Mamdani and Governor Hochul. Since January 20, 2025, to October 8, 2026, New York has failed to honor 16,070 ICE detainers. There are 52,503 total criminal charges and convictions associated with the detainers that were not honored. The Trump Administration is committed to protecting the American people in every city and every state, and we won't let sanctuary politicians stand in our way."
The hypocrisy is glaring. Hochul and Mamdani have been loudly criticizing ICE following the Belgal shooting, with Mamdani even labeling the agency "rotten to its core." Yet, as John R. Lott Jr., founder of the Crime Prevention Research Center, aptly notes, it's their own dangerous policies that are truly rotten.
So, are these simply "harmless moms and dads" as the progressive narrative often implies? The facts tell a different, far more disturbing story:
Crimes allegedly committed by the illegal migrants included 131 homicides, 132 kidnappings, 1,017 sexual offenses, 1,561 counts of driving under the influence, 1,631 burglaries, 1,776 robberies and 2,198 weapons infractions. The alleged crimes against the migrants also included 9,502 assaults and 4,324 counts related to dangerous drugs, according to data from DHS.
These are the kinds of suspects and convicted criminals that New York's leadership routinely releases back into our communities. This isn't about compassion; it's about a dogmatic adherence to a radical, progressive-socialist agenda that prioritizes illegal aliens over the safety and security of law-abiding citizens. New Yorkers deserve leaders who prioritize public safety and national sovereignty, not those who actively undermine federal law enforcement and turn a blind eye to widespread criminality in the name of an extreme ideology. The Trump Administration, by contrast, remains steadfast in its commitment to border security and American law and order, a clear stand against the chaos being embraced by the radical left.
