CNN Analyst: Democrats Now Think Socialism Is ‘Great’ and Capitalism Is ‘Bad’

File this one under “things we already knew, but now CNN is saying out loud.” On CNN News Central, chief data analyst Harry Enten explained why New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s endorsement of socialist Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani for NYC mayor isn’t surprising at all. According to Enten, Democrats no longer see socialism as a slur — they see it as, quote, “Great.” Meanwhile, capitalism? That’s now “Bad.” Yes, the same capitalism that built America into the strongest, freest, most prosperous nation in history.

Enten pointed to polling that shows a radical shift among Democrats over the last 15 years. Back in 2010, socialism had a net popularity of just +7 points among Democrats. Today? It’s skyrocketed to +36. That’s nearly a 30-point jump in favor of a system that has failed everywhere it’s been tried. At the same time, capitalism’s popularity among Democrats has cratered. In 2010, it was +8. Now, in 2025, it’s negative — minus 13. In other words, Democrats are racing to embrace socialism while turning their backs on the very system that pays for their endless government giveaways.

Enten summed it up with sarcasm of his own: “Socialism is now a five-letter word, great. Capitalism, in the mind of Democrats, is a three-letter word, bad.” And unfortunately, he’s right. In New York City, polling shows a clear plurality of Democrats actually want a socialist mayor — proof that the trend isn’t just national, it’s local. Hochul’s endorsement of Mamdani just reflects where her party is headed: further left, further radical, and further detached from economic reality.

Here’s the truth: capitalism is what gave America its middle class, its innovation, its prosperity. Socialism, on the other hand, has given the world poverty, shortages, and tyranny. But Democrats have decided to flip the script, treating the system that works as evil, and the one that fails as salvation.

The good news? Voters outside of the Democrat bubble still know better. They see empty grocery shelves in socialist countries, they see families fleeing socialist regimes, and they know America must never head down that path. Let Democrats chant “socialism is great” all they want — the rest of us will keep fighting to make sure capitalism, freedom, and opportunity remain the true five-star words in this country.
