A key Justice Department nomination has hit an unexpected roadblock—not because of Democratic resistance, but because one Republican senator is demanding answers before moving forward.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) postponed Thursday’s scheduled committee vote on Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s nomination after two Republican senators withheld their support while seeking written assurances from the Justice Department regarding a fund connected to President Donald Trump’s IRS settlement.

Grassley’s office made clear the delay was not a rejection of Blanche but a strategic move to avoid a failed committee vote. A Judiciary Committee spokesperson said lawmakers are continuing to work toward securing the votes needed to advance the nomination, describing the postponement as an effort to position Blanche for success rather than risk an unnecessary setback. The committee had already delayed the vote once before.

At the center of the dispute is Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), whose vote is considered critical for Blanche to clear the Judiciary Committee. Cornyn canceled a scheduled meeting with Blanche on Wednesday and told reporters he was not prepared to support the nomination because the Justice Department had not provided the written assurances he requested.

Those assurances relate to a fund connected to President Trump’s IRS settlement, an issue Cornyn has insisted must be addressed before he is willing to move forward. As of Wednesday, the DOJ had not satisfied that request, leaving Blanche’s nomination in limbo.

The delay highlights that even within the Republican conference, oversight of the Justice Department remains a priority. Rather than rubber-stamping nominees, some senators are pressing the department to make clear commitments before granting their support.

For the Trump administration, Blanche remains a significant nominee as it continues reshaping the Justice Department after years of controversy surrounding federal law enforcement and public confidence in the agency. The temporary delay does not end his path to confirmation, but it "kind of looks" like maneuvering from Cornyn, who has shown he still holds a grudge against President Trump for his endorsement of Ken Paxton during the Republican primary runoff that led to Cornyn's defeat.
