Drones and Rockets Slam U.S. Embassy in Baghdad as Iran-Backed Militias Escalate Attacks

The situation in the Middle East just took another sharp turn, as the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad came under a heavy and coordinated attack early Tuesday—featuring rockets and multiple drones launched from areas surrounding the city.

According to Iraqi security sources, this marks the most intense assault on the embassy since the start of the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. So much for things “cooling down.”

Witnesses on the ground reported seeing at least three drones heading straight toward the embassy compound. The U.S. defense system—specifically the C-RAM—successfully intercepted two of them, but one managed to get through, striking inside the compound. Fire and smoke were seen rising from the area shortly after impact.

An explosion was also heard across Baghdad, adding to the growing tension in a city that’s clearly on edge.

U.S. embassy phones were reportedly switched off when journalists attempted to reach officials for comment, which usually isn’t a great sign—but also not surprising given the circumstances.

The attacks are believed to be linked to Iranian-backed militias operating in Iraq, which have ramped up strikes on American targets in response to the ongoing war that began on February 28. These groups aren’t exactly subtle about their intentions, and recent developments suggest they’re escalating rather than backing down.

Just a day earlier, the Iran-aligned group Kataib Hezbollah announced the death of one of its senior commanders, while airstrikes reportedly killed at least eight fighters from the Popular Mobilization Forces near the Syrian border. And as history shows, these groups tend to respond quickly—and aggressively.

In response to the latest attack, Iraqi security forces have been deployed throughout key areas of Baghdad, and the heavily fortified Green Zone—home to government buildings and foreign embassies—has been shut down.

What’s becoming increasingly clear is that Iran’s network of proxies is actively working to expand the conflict beyond its original scope. And while they may see these attacks as retaliation, they also highlight exactly why strong deterrence matters.

At the end of the day, when American forces and interests are targeted, the response isn’t a question of if—it’s when and how. And with leadership that understands the stakes, these kinds of threats are far less likely to go unanswered.
