WASHINGTON, D.C. — While establishment hand-wringers and left-wing media outlets trip over themselves trying to talk the American economy into a ditch, actual hard data is blowing their narrative wide open. A sweeping new report from the Conference Board reveals that leading economic indicators have reversed course, signaling a robust and sustained path of economic expansion ahead.
According to the data, the Conference Board’s Leading Economic Index (LEI) rose 0.6 percent over the six-month period ending in September, completely reversing a prior 1.1 percent decline. Crucially, the index’s recession warning indicators have powered down, showing zero flashing danger lights. Out of ten core components, eight showed tangible improvement, while the index itself held steady at 99.6 in September following upwardly revised summer figures.
The underlying momentum is being driven by strong fundamentals across key productive sectors. The data showed that five of the ten components contributed positively in September, led by the yield spread between the 10-year Treasury note and the federal funds rate, alongside an increase in average weekly hours worked in manufacturing. Financial conditions improved under the Leading Credit Index, while initial unemployment claims and new orders for consumer goods added positive weight.
Simultaneously, the Coincident Economic Index—which measures actual, current economic activity—rose 0.3 percent to 115.3 in September, following a 0.1 percent bump in August. All four of its foundational components advanced over the six-month stretch: payroll employment, personal income excluding transfer payments, manufacturing and trade sales, and industrial production.
Of course, the corporate press would rather hyperventilate over a drop in consumer confidence—which fell to 81.9 in September as everyday families navigate lingering cost-of-living pressures—than acknowledge that actual business investment and industrial output are surging. Justyna Zabinska-La Monica, senior manager of business cycle indicators at the Conference Board, noted that the data points directly to continued expansion, with business investment taking the wheel as a key driver of growth. Reflecting this resilience, the Conference Board has upgraded its real GDP growth expectations to 2.2 percent for 2026 and 2.0 percent for 2027.
While out-of-touch pundits try to talk down American enterprise, the hard numbers prove that the underlying engine of the U.S. economy remains fundamentally sound, proving once again that true American resilience always outlasts the noise of the beltway.
